LEBRON BRINGS SWINE FLU, SHAQ TO PITTSBURGH

If you're a germophobe, you'll probably be skipping tonight's Cleveland-Dallas exhibition game at the Pete, which features a swine-flu-infected Lebron James, Steeler fan Shaquille O'Neal, and attention fan Mark Cuban, among others. In addition to appearing at tonight's game, Cuban will also be speaking at Pitt at 3:30 today; maybe someone will bring up the topic of his recent Twitter war with Peter King, which delighted many.

As for tonight's game, it's the next-to-last tuneup in the preseason for the Cavs, who wrap things up tomorrow night against Boston at Columbus, Ohio's Schottenstein Center. 3-3 Cleveland just lost to the 4-1 Mavs on Saturday night, while resting James, O'Neal, and Mo Williams. Which means tonight's games qualifies as a preseason grudge match, if such a thing exists (this just in: it doesn't). Nonetheless, I'm sure there will be a playoff-like atmosphere in the air.

James, who took a whole two days to recover from the epidemic that is sweeping the nation, played 19 minutes against Dejuan Blair and San Antonio on Friday night, scoring 22 points. It sounds to me like he read the tremendous article on the myth of swine flu from Maddox and has no fear for it. Maybe he's just the man to sneeze in Maddox's face. Or he can sneeze in your face if you get the right seat. Tipoff is at 7:30.

EASON IN, REDMAN OUT

The Steelers' game of roster musical chairs found a seat for recently-released DE Nick Eason and once again sent RB Red Zone Redman away without a chair. The Steelers do have room on their practice squad, so the possibility exists that Redman could be headed there. But for now, he's fair game for any team to sign.

As riveting as this news is, I feel the need to fill this post out with a few other Steeler links, etc., from today:

--When you talk about Ben Roethlisberger as much as I do, you can expect to get pummeled with emails when Lord Peter King proclaimeth our celebrated quarterback the third-best in the NFL right now. And to answer your question, no, I'm not nearly as excited about this development as you would imagine. I think even I'm tired of hearing myself talk about how great Roethlisberger is at this point.

--Hines Ward talked to the boys at the Kiss 96.1 Morning Show on Monday about a variety of colorful topics, and you can listen to that here.

--Rapper Common is making blog headlines for his in-person diss of Browns QB Brady Quinn at a Cleveland show last week. Dissing Brady Quinn? That's so 2007. [Fan Sided]

--And finally, one of my most loyal e-mailers has twice reminded me today to mention that it's Mario Lemieux's birthday. So let's all blow out a candle for the best thing to happen to Pittsburgh sports, quite possibly of all time. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some WWE Raw to watch. This just in: Eric Tangradi will be in the crowd!

BIG BEN'S HEAD GRACES SI COVER

Ben Roethlisberger, the sixth-most-handsome quarterback in the NFL (anyone want to debate those power rankings?) is one of four regional cover boys for this week's SI, joining Atlanta's Matt Ryan, Dallas' Tony Romo, and Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers. All four signal callers were interviewed by everyone's favorite NFL scribe, Peter King, who was able to extract from Roethlisberger that he doesn't hate any opponent and if he wasn't a quarterback, he would've liked to be a Mariano Rivera-type relief pitcher. Makes sense. Both guys have a good fastball, make a lot of money, and are pretty solid at the end of games, no?

BEN HAD BROKEN RIBS IN SB43

Well, I guess that's the last word on that topic. From Peter King:

Roethlisberger, playing on adrenaline, toughed out the game with at least two small rib fractures -- which didn't show up in an X-ray the week before the game but did when he got an MRI after returning to Pittsburgh.
Roethlisberger's always been sort of odd with injury-related news, Belichickian at times, Chatty Cathy at other times. Who can forget that bizarre interview with Andrea Kremer in September? And then there was the famous did he/didn't he get x-rays distraction during SB43 week. Those are just two recent examples. I know if I think a little harder, I could probably come up with a few more.

Let's face it: there's a very good chance that Big Ben could have an abbreviated NFL career. With the motorcycle accident, multiple concussions, ribs, shoulder, appendix, thumb, knee, and the cumulative affect of all of those sacks, that body has taken a lot of abuse in the last five years. Don't believe me? Check out his injury history. It's a horror show. It's a modern miracle how this guy is still standing upright, let alone winning Super Bowls.

Long story short, we should appreciate every day that #7 lines up behind center.

Also - very relevant article from Ed Bouchette in January '09 talking about this very topic while reminding me of the broken toes incident that Bill Cowher disputed.

BIG BEN'S BIGGEST GAMES

ESPN: the Magazine just released their list of Ben Roethlisberger's five biggest games, which I thought I would pass along. The amazing part is that this list could've been much, much longer. But I digress.

It's nice to see that people outside of Western Pennsylvania are starting to notice our quarterback's play, from Fox Sports to (gasp!) Peter King, who once ranked Roethlisberger below such luminaries as Jon Kitna and Vince Young in his quarterback hierarchy. And no, before you ask, I'll never forget that.

I DECLARE SUCCESS

My one-man crusade demanding respect for Ben Roethlisberger over the past year-plus has been well documented on this site. It all started with the Ben Roethlisberger = Rodney Dangerfield post last November in which I compared the Steeler QB to the late, non-respected comedian. I was tired of the football know-it-alls constantly preaching the greatness of Tony Romo, Carson Palmer, Drew Bress, etc., and treating Roethlisberger like a lowly "game manager" in the Kyle Orton/Trent Dilfer category.
I worked with much diligence on the topic, and you were of great assistance, sending me link after link of what we perceived as slights against Ben. And just when I thought we were getting somewhere, Peter King once again placed him behind Palmer and Brees (who've combined for one career playoff win) in his 2008 player rankings.
With this as a backdrop, you can imagine my unbridled enthusiasm when my inbox started filling up with the following link from ESPN.com, an article entitled, "Big Ben the NFL's heir apparent to Brady and Manning".
The article took a look at five quarterbacks poised to fill the void created by a sidelined Tom Brady and a Peyton Manning who's clearly not himself. The candidates? Big Ben, Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers, and Tony Romo. That's right, Brees, Palmer, and Derek Anderson were not even mentioned.

And who did this panel of scouts choose? In a close vote, Roethlisberger edged Manning, followed then by Cutler, Romo, and Rivers. I officially declare success in our collective cause.

Answering the question of "Which of these QBs would you want running your team right now?", I defer to ESPN's Matt Williamson, who clearly knows his stuff:

Matt Williamson: "Roethlisberger, and by a substantial margin. The other four are excellent young quarterbacks, but when comparing each player's overall body of work, none comes close to Roethlisberger's. He is the only one who has not only achieved, but sustained, excellence. And he continues to get better as Steelers coach Mike Tomlin puts more responsibility on his shoulders. He takes too many sacks -- and probably always will -- but by holding on to the ball Roethlisberger also converts downfield plays with astonishing frequency. At worst he ranks second, behind Cutler, in terms of physical abilities. In terms of playmaking skills, he's tops. Most impressive is Big Ben's winning percentage -- and his Super Bowl ring. More could be on the way. "

Well said, my friend.

And while we're talking Ben, guess who's leading the NFL in passing with a 136.3 rating and 75% completion percentage? You're right. The heir apparent to Brady and Manning.

In reality, articles like these means nothing, but as Steeler fans, we have an obligation to become upset at any perceived slight by a member of the national media. It has nothing to do with the outcome of the games, and we shouldn't get so riled up. But you have to admit, the ongoing debate of quarterbacks has given us plenty to talk about for a long time, no?

9/08/2008

WE MIGHT BE GETTING THROUGH

"I think I'm starting to think Carson Palmer belongs in Jay Cutlerville. He hasn't been a commanding presence on the field for some time, I'd say going back to mid-2006, and I'm hard-pressed to think of him in the same league with the top five or six quarterbacks. I did put him there in my top 50 in the SI NFL Preview issue, but after watching him Sunday, I almost wish I could have that one back."
Those words were uttered by one Peter King, who I've called out roughly 1,428 times in the past year-plus for his constant ranking of Palmer as head-and-shoulders above our very own Ben Roethlisberger. And to answer your next question, yes, I did faint after reading this the first time.
Not only did King rank Palmer in his 2008 "top 50", he ranked him 7th in the entire league, right behind Drew Brees, who at #6 (in the league) has won one career playoff game. As for Roethlisberger, King had him 18th. I don't know about you, but I highly doubt that there are 17 players in the league I'd rather have right now.
In other King news, he appears to be starting a love affair with LB Lamarr Woodley, his Defensive Player of the Week as well as his prediction for "Non-Star Who Has Breakout Season". However, it must be noted that right next to the Woodley prediction, King named Casey Hampton as "Star Who Has Subpar Season".

"THE POWER DIVISION. From Jason Archbell, of Virginia Beach, Va.: "There has been a lot of talk this year (and many other years) about how tough the NFC East is. Do you think a lot of this has to do with the talent level of the quarterbacks? Jason Campbell is probably the worst of the four (so far) and he is a pretty solid young quarterback. Compare that to every other division where the team with the best quarterback is probably the favorite to win the division the last few years.''Hmmm. Not sure if the team with the best quarterback in the division is automatically favored. Carson Palmer's the best in the AFC North, and the Bengals are the third- or fourth-best team in that division. Drew Brees is the best in the NFC South, and are the Saints universally favored this year? Doubt it. But I do think it gives a team the biggest edge it could have at any position group, obviously. Re Campbell, you will be pleasantly surprised how good he plays this year."

Ben Roethlisberger = Rodney Dangerfield

6-2
1st Place, AFC North
111.9 QB Rating
66% Completion Pct
20 TD / 6 INT
217 Passing Yards Per Game

What are these? They are the 2007 stats of one Ben Roethlisberger at the halfway point. Pretty good, no? Well, actually, no, according to a still-large pool of sports media members.
I've been very outspoken on the national perception of Roethlisberger, but at the midpoint of the season, I feel the need to speak out once again. Yes, I know the analogy about opinions, and I know they really don't mean anything. But as an objective football/Steeler fan, there just seems to be an injustice going on here that greatly annoys me.
First comes an email yesterday from a reader named Ethan, who is familiar with my Ben Soapbox:
"Don, you would love the Mike and the Mad Dog show that's on now. They've spent all afternoon debating the merits of Eli vs Big Ben. Mike said that if you polled NFL GM's, about 50% of them (and maybe more) would take Eli. They concluded that Ben isn't even one of the top five qb's in the league. They like:
1. Brady
2. Manning
3. Palmer
4. Brees (!)
5. Favre
This really ruffled the feathers of the New York faction of Steeler Nation, so M & MD have been taking angry phone calls all afternoon."
Then comes a segment by Mel Kiper on this morning's Mike and Mike show on ESPN Radio. Mike Greenberg asked Kiper "outside of Brady and Manning, which QB would you pick to start a franchise?"
You know the answer before I write it. Yep, Carson Palmer. Even better, when they asked Kiper who else intrigued him, guess what his answer was? DEREK ANDERSON. You mean the same Derek Anderson who couldn't beat out Charlie Frye in training camp just a few months ago? Yeah, he has a career passer rating of 82, an impressive lifetime record of 6-4, and his team just traded a 1st and 2nd round pick because they felt they needed a QB...but you're absolutely right, Mel. That's certainly enough data to leapfrog him into the top five.
The granddaddy of them all is revisiting Peter King's utterly ridiculous 2007 Quarterback Rankings, from June 18. I laugh out loud (or LOL, for you non-hip readers out there) when I am constantly reminded that Peter King is considered one of the foremost experts on football in our country. I thought experts were supposed to know what they were talking about. This article clearly shows that King knows no more than you or I (you know, people who aren't considered at the absolute top of the football writing field) when talking about football.
King's column, which I dissected in depth immediately after he tossed it to the masses, was contradictory on a number of levels. For instance, as part of his formula, he says, "I value postseason success". Really? That's funny, because 7 of his top 10 have never even won a playoff game. He then went on to rate a player's intangibles, which by definition cannot be done. It was an absolute laugher.
To revisit, here are his rankings, which speak for themselves:
1. Manning (Peyton, not Eli, altough with King's logic I wouldn't be surprised)
2. Brady
3. Brees
4. Palmer
5. Bulger
6. Hasselbeck
7. Young
8. Rivers
9. Kitna
10. Cutler
11. Romo
12. McNabb
13. McNair
14. Favre
15. Pennington
16. Delhomme
17. Roethlisberger

That's enough rhetoric about opinions. Let's cut to the chase and take a look at Ben's career stats. As you know, the numbers never lie:
2004: 14-0 regular season, 1-1 playoffs, 98.1 QB Rating, 17 TD/11 INT, 66% completion pct, 1 rush TD, 187 Passing Yards/Game.
Notes: He went 15-1 as a rookie, losing his 1st game in the AFC Championship against the dynasty of the day. I'd say a solid campaign by all accounts.
2005: 9-3 regular season, 4-0 playoffs, 98.6 QB Rating, 17 TD/9 INT, 62% completion pct, 3 rush TD, 183 Passing Yards/Game
Notes: Steelers get a low seed in part because of their 2-2 record without Roethlisberger. A Super Bowl win in year two and a career record of 24-4, 29-5 including playoffs. Not too shabby of a career so far.
2006: 7-8 regular season, 0-0 playoffs, 75.4 QB Rating, 18 TD/23 INT, 60% completion pct, 2 rush TD, 234 Passing Yards/Game
Notes: Near-fatal motorcycle crash, appendectomy on the eve of the opener, and a concussion to boot. Spare me the "Super Bowl Hangover" analogies. Ben's inability to prepare in the offseason due to the accident was reason #1, 2, and 3 why this team did not play up to snuff.
2007: 6-2 regular season, 111.9 QB Rating, 20 TD/6 INT, 66% Completion Pct, 1 Rush TD, 217 Passing Yards/Game
Notes: Roethlisberger, of sound mind and body with an offseason split between relaxation and preparation, is playing better than ever. In addition, he has a bigger say in the offense and a better working relationship with his coordinator.
Career: 36-13 regular season (41-14 including playoffs), 91.9 QB Rating, 72 TD/49 INT, 63% Completion Pct, 6 Rush TD, 209 Passing Yards/Game, and one Super Bowl ring.
I ask, on what planet is a 74.5% winning percentage - an average of 12-4 per season, mind you - not incredible? I think the evidence is overwhelming that Roethlisberger is clearly the #3 quarterback in the game, without a doubt.
Critics will look at his 2006 campaign and knock him based on that, but when looking at 2004, 2005, and 2007 (you know, the years when his life wasn't in danger), it's clear that 2006 was the exception and not the rule.
Keep your Palmers, your Breeses, your Romos and your Youngs. Their perceptions are largely based on expectations for the future that have yet to be met. I'll take my chances with the young guy that's already been there, done that, and will do it again. He's the NFL version of Rodney Dangerfield - he gets no respect. Unfortunately, as long as Manning and Brady are around, he will be at highest #3. But let's just say this: he's closer to #3 than to #17. If you don't agree with that, maybe that means you're ready to be an NFL expert.

Peter King Goes List Crazy

I thought I was long-winded on occasion, and then I saw this list from SI.com's Peter King...the epic "King 500" of the "500 Best Players in the NFL".
From 1 (Peyton Manning) to 500 (Chris Simms), King ranks 'em as he sees 'em. The highest Steeler is Troy Polamalu (28; "Donnie Shell with a ponytail"); Polamalu is joined in the top 100 by Casey Hampton (44), Alan Faneca (67), Big Ben (85) and Hines Ward (94).
"The criteria: importance of the position (I had quarterback, left tackle, pass rusher and cornerback at the top, but with room for the explosive player), talent level and age -- with a nod to young players on the cusp of a breakout season."
King explains how he did the list here, claiming he was talked out of making his list 1696 deep (in order to rank the entire league). Digest it if you dare.

ESPN.com to Big Ben: You Suck

If I'm ever a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, I hope I never have two near-death experiences in the same offseason. Because I've seen what it's done to the perception of Ben Roethlisberger, and it's simply unreal.

On June 18, I wrote waaaay too many words about Peter King's slap in the face to the Steelers QB in his "2007 Quarterback Rankings". He ranked Roethlisberger as the 17th-best QB in the NFL in 2007, behind such luminaries as Jon Kitna and Jay Cutler. Worst of all, he said his rankings took winning into consideration. Only three QBs in the league have won more playoff games than the 25-year-old Roethlisberger: Favre, Manning, and Brady. In the regular season, Roethlisberger was 14-0 as a rookie starter in 2004, and 9-3 in 2005. And two of those three losses were to Manning and Brady (the third was to Baltimore). It was a ridiculous argument.
The latest Roethlisberger diss comes from ESPN.com, in an article entitled, "Cantonized". It's a list of 50 players the WWL believes will be enshrined in Canton someday. Three Steelers made the cut, including #23, Alan Faneca; 31, Troy Polamalu; and 43, Hines Ward. Other than "the big three" QBs I mentioned above (Manning, Brady, Favre), other quarterback they believe will have a bust someday included Carson Palmer (38), Vince Young (39), and Matt Leinart (41). The list even had rookies who've never played a down in the NFL, such as Calvin Johnson (40) and Adrian Peterson (50).
Who was left off? I'm sure you know by now. And to safeguard themselves from columns exactly like this one, they had a response ready for why they left Ben off their list:
At first glance, it might seem preposterous to slam the Hall door in Big Ben's face so soon. But upon closer inspection, it makes sense. Roethlisberger proved to be an effective game manager in his first two pro seasons, and he has a Super Bowl ring to show for it. But his Super Bowl performance (9-for-21 with two picks) was dreadful, and then he regressed in 2006. Now the Steelers are losing personnel from their championship team, and nothing to this point suggests that Roethlisberger can carry an undermanned team on his shoulders to playoff success.
Notice something missing in this paragraph? How about "near fatal motorcycle accident", "appendicitis", and "serious concussion"? Or how about no mention whatsoever for Roethlisberger playing his best football in the 2005-06 playoffs? No, we'll just casually sweep that under the rug.
They categorize Ben as a "game manager", a backhanded compliment for a crap quarterback that can't help his team win games. While Roethlisberger did not have a great Super Bowl, he downed the aforementioned teams of Palmer AND Manning on their turf in the 2005-06 playoffs, in addition to beating a tough Denver team on the road. And he was a difference-maker.
ESPN would rather put their stock in Carson Palmer, a guy who's led his team to one winning season and two 8-8 seasons; Matt Leinart, who plays for the NFL version of the Pirates (perennially rebuilding...I know, THIS is the year!); and Vince Young, a running QB who could be the next Steve McNair...or the newest model of Kordell/Vick.
If that's not bad enough, they have Roethlisberger lumped in players who've accomplished nothing in the NFL on their list of players who missed their cut: Eli Manning, Tony Romo, Brady Quinn, Tony Romo, Jamarcus Russell, Vick, Mario Williams, etc.
This article isn't so much about what Peter King thinks or what ESPN.com thinks about Ben, because everyone's entitled to an opinion. This is more about how the country collectively seems to be so down on Roethlisberger. I can only hope that Ben reads or somehow hears about all the doubt lingering in the media. I feel like I've gone out on a limb in the offseason, because I seem to be in the minority of those who still believe in him. But somehow I don't think I'm crazy. When you consider what happened to him last year, I just can't imagine Palmer, Leinart, or anyone else having a great season after that. I simply feel that Ben gets zero respect for his accomplishments pre-accident. They're like ancient history. It's time to give Ben Roethlisberger some credit for what he's done in his short career. Tony Romo and Vince Young can only dream of such a level of success.

The News

A recap of your favorite links, named in honor of Mike Tomlin

--Training camp is near, so you know what that means...time for Alan Faneca to give us a new round of his "I'm unhappy" speeches.

--The Pirates get swept by the Rockies with a 5-3 loss today. And I didn't even get to write about last night's loss yet! Actually, there wasn't much to write about last night. I just had to mention the way the game ended: Jason Bay stared at a called strike three and casually mosied off the field. Again. Can we get this guy some Vitamin Water or something? Or should we be apathetic to his apathy?
--A reader sends along this article written last week entitled, "Michael Vick Will Not Be Indicted: Shhhhhhhh!", where the author called out a number of people as racist and made some pretty bold accusations. Yep, he looks kinda silly after the 18-page document unleashed yesterday.
--It looks like 2007 will be an exciting year for the Big East, with four Heisman contenders in the conference. And that's not counting Shady McCoy.
--SI's Stewart Mandel takes in Big East Media Day at the Eisenhower House in Rhode Island, and he had this to say:
As the sun set along the coastline, I turned to a writer friend and said, "Under ordinary circumstances, this has to be one of the top 10 places you'd least likely expect to run into Dave Wannstedt."

--Don't like the jewelry? How about a Big Ben Christmas ornament for your lady?

--Bugs and Cranks put together a video of all the events that have gone down since the Pirates last had a winning season. But hey, the Pirates are committed to putting a competitive ballclub on the field, so we shouldn't be upset.

--Remember Adam the Penn State fan? How could you forget him? Well, he's already counting down the days to PSU-Notre Dame (about 2 months away), so he sends over two links:

Handlers are spreading the word to press members that Dwayne Johnson should not be referred to as "The Rock." Not getting the memo: Ben Roethlisberger, who greeted the former pro wrestler backstage.

"I never wanted to say, from this day forward, I will be 'Dwayne Johnson, The Actor,'" Johnson said earlier. "If there's some action movie with guns and ass-kicking, and they want to call me 'The Rock,' that's cool."

"Whatever doesn't get me beat up," Roethlisberger said later.

Peter King Has Officially Lost Me

I've written about SI.com's Peter King many a time in this little piece of the internet called Mondesi's House. In fact, if you click the little link beneath this post that says "Peter King", you'll get every mention of his in site history. Some days, he's interesting. Most days, I totally disagree with him. Either way, I end up reading his stuff, and why, I still haven't figured out.
But this morning, Peter's already-shaky credibility with me took a major blow when he released his "2007 QB Rankings". It's two pages from the mouth of SI's Football Grand Poobah devoted to nothing but QBs and QBs only.
If I've learned one thing from the internet, it's that people love lists. And if I've learned one thing from King today, it's to make your list as completely irrational as possible, because every website and sports talk show from coast to coast will mention it. As the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Although I think Michael Vick may disagree with that particular saying.
Where should I start? How about King's proclamation of Ben Roethlisberger at #17 and going from there? Here are a few QBs that King has ranked higher than Big Ben, along with my thoughts on his choices:
7. Vince Young. As it's been proven time and time again, if you want to win a Super Bowl, you need a running quarterback.
8. Phil Rivers. Might be someday, but has a lot more to accomplish.
9. Jon Kitna. I think this was a misprint. Has to be.
10. Jay Cutler. How can you argue against his 2-3 career record?
11. Tony Romo. Waaay too much hype with this guy. He's a football version of any player on the Yankees or Red Sox.
12. Donovan McNabb. No Super Bowl wins, two seasons ended by injury, a team drafting for the future at the position...sounds like a recipe for the 12th-best QB in the league to me!
13. Steve McNair. You know, the same McNair he bashed last year.
14. Brett Favre. No comment necessary.
15. Chad Pennington. 2006 was the first season of his seven-year career in which he's played all 16 games. And if you think it's impossible to play a full season without getting hurt, look at Mr. Consecutive Games Played at #14 and be reminded that yes, it is possible.
16. Jake Delhomme. He has such a lock on the QB position that the Panthers signed David Carr.
What, no room for Michael Vick ahead of Ben?
In fairness, let's allow Pete to defend his ranking of Roethlisberger, which he correctly calculated as one that would generate controversy:
• Ben Roethlisberger 17th? What gives? From Year 1 to Year 2 of his career, his completion percentage dropped 3.7 points; from year two to three it fell 3.0 points. His TD-to-interception ratio, plus-eight in 2005, dropped to minus-five last season. He is profoundly inconsistent. I say he's a C-plus player until I see six or eight straight weeks of the same guy.
Yeah, genius. He also had a motorcycle crash, an appendectomy, and a concussion, which you casually failed to mention. But I'm sure that had nothing to do with his interception ratio.
Here's the explanation for how King constructed this farce...I mean, list:
As for how I arrived at my picks, other than with a divining rod, I used a few measuring sticks. I value wins from my quarterback, and that helped Manning and Brady, the leaders in victories over the last two years. I value postseason success, and their seven combined wins over the past two years is significant. Completion percentage and yards-per-attempt are the two passing stats I value the most because they tell you how often a quarterback succeeds in efficiently moving the chains through the air. Finally, intangibles. Brady led all passers with a 10 on a 10-point scale, because he's a coach, an offseason facilitator, a free-agent recruiter -- and he does it while retaining respect from the guys he often has to lean on hard.
King, always a proponent of the "rings are all that matters" school, has apparently forgotten that the 25-year-old Roethlisberger led his team to the AFC Championship in his rookie season and won a ring in his second season. Of course, as I constantly point out, everyone else has already forgotten those minor career accomplishments, so the Steelers should probably start looking at his replacement in the 2008 draft.
Think about this: King will knock Roethlisberger for completion percentage, then he says he values postseason success. Here are the playoff resumes of everyone he listed ahead of Roethlisberger, who has 5 playoff wins and a ring:
1- Peyton Manning - 7 career playoff wins, 1 Super Bowl
2- Tom Brady - 12 career playoff wins, 3 Super Bowls
3- Drew Brees - 1 career playoff win
4- The Great Carson Palmer - 0 career playoff wins
5- Marc Bulger -1 career playoff win
6- Matt Hasselbeck - 3 career playoff wins
7- Young - never in the playoffs
8- Rivers - 0 career playoff wins
9- Kitna - 0 career playoff wins
10- Cutler - never in the playoffs
11- Romo - 0 career playoff wins, and botched the only playoff game he played in
13- McNair - 5 career playoff wins
15- Pennington - 2 career playoff wins
16- Delhomme - 5 career playoff wins
That's right. The only guys who've has more postseason success than the 25-year-old Roethlisberger are Manning (31 years old), Brady (29), and Favre (37). It's worth noting that he ranks the 3-ring Brady behind Manning, proving once again that football fans and writers have very short memories. Apparently the only postseason success King values is what happened in the 2006 season.
I guess he values postseason success, but not as much as completion percentage. Personally, I'd take a winner with less-sexy stats than a loser who puts up 400 yards a week 100 times out of 100. But that's enough on Ben. My blood pressure has already risen too much. Let's get to the next thing I'd like to talk about regarding this list. That would be the fact that King ranks intangibles on a scale of 1-10.

Peter, here's the definition of "intangible":
1. not tangible; incapable of being perceived by the sense of touch, as incorporeal or immaterial things; impalpable.
2. not definite or clear to the mind: intangible arguments.
3. (of an asset) existing only in connection with something else, as the goodwill of a business. –noun
4. something intangible, esp. an intangible asset: Intangibles are hard to value.
Again, here's his definition of an "intangible":
Finally, intangibles. Brady led all passers with a 10 on a 10-point scale, because he's a coach, an offseason facilitator, a free-agent recruiter -- and he does it while retaining respect from the guys he often has to lean on hard.
That's not an intangible. No, it's not a statistic either, but there's a better way to categorize it than "intangible". How about a 1-10 ranking of "buying into and exemplifying the team's philosophy"? No, we'll just dumb it down call them intangibles.
Before I conclude, I must add that I planned to make a brief mention of this, but I received so many irate emails from Steeler fans that I believed a commentary was necessary. We should start the nominations for a "National Football Writer Most Disliked by Steeler Fans" award. Right now, King and Pete Prisco are neck-and-neck.

Tomlin Eats Pasta Alla Ben

SI's Peter King does five pages on Mike Tomlin, and there's some interesting stuff (other than this fantastic photo):

-Tomlin's usual meal at La Tavola Italiana on Mt. Washington is "Pasta Alla Ben", a fusilli-and-sausage dish named after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
-Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, only one team allowed fewer than the 985 rushing yards his Vikings defense allowed last year.
-And my personal favorite:
At defensive meetings each day, Tomlin put two pages on the overhead projector. One was the Loaf Chart, which totaled the number of plays on which each of his players had dogged it during the previous practice. Tomlin preached accountability. The other sheet was called the News, which singled out players for mistakes such as jumping offside or dropping an interception or looking half-asleep. "I'm not telling a story," Tomlin would say, "I'm reporting the news."
I first heard about "The News" in that great Joe Starkey piece I mentioned yesterday. I'll take a pause from King's article to let Joe elaborate a bit further on "The News":
"If you're not up to his standards, you're going to be on the news," said backup nose tackle Chris Hoke. "That's what he does, he puts it up there and says, 'The News,' and everyone holds their breath like, 'Here it comes.' You're hoping you're not going to be up there."
[Hines] Ward found himself in the headlines one morning for spiking the ball after a catch. A new NFL rule prohibits spikes except after touchdowns.
"You don't want to end up in the headlines," Ward said, laughing. "He's not calling anyone out, really. It's just the facts. If you loaf on a play, you end up in the news. If you fumble a ball, you end up in the news. If you throw a pick, you end up in the news. He calls it like he sees it."
Going back to King's article, we'll close with a great Tomlin story about Love Boater Fred Smoot:
Eight games into the second year of a six-year, $34 million free-agent contract, Smoot was not playing well: no interceptions and just one pass breakup. Tomlin opened a midweek defensive meeting by saying, "We're going to have a change at cornerback. Cedric Griffin's going to replace Fred Smoot, and if Fred does not come and compete for the job, Cedric's going to be the corner the rest of the year."
Mike Tomlin, you impress me more and more every day. If there's one thing this team needs, it's accountability. These articles will officially re-ignite your Steeler Fever. Camp can't start soon enough.

Cowher Statue on ESPN, FredEx a Substitute Teacher, Dolphins #12, Bowl Projections, Paris, Britney and Lindsay Together

As reader "Soup" points out in the comments section, was ESPN's DJ Gallo inspired by the Mondesi-created "Cowher Statue" in Monday's ESPN Page 2 wrapup?
Remember Freddie "Fred Ex" Mitchell, the mouthy wide receiver for the Super Bowl Philadelphia Eagles? Wonder what he's up to? Would you guess "just fired for hitting on girls as a substitute high school teacher?"
This dude is way too excited to get his picture taken with Freddie Mitchell

First we had Firejoemorgan. Now, through the wonders of FoxSports Blogs, I present The Bill Simmons Hater

The resemblance? Uncanny.

Peter King Miami Dolphins Fine Fifteen Watch: This week, the Fightin' Sabans are up to #12. And that 1-6 start is just a faint memory. Don't forget to read all seven pages of this week's drivel disguised as a football column. By the end, you're reading stuff like "I can't get past the Wednesday New York Times crossword. Usually I can't finish that one either. Shameful admission." and "Witnessed the most insane Starbucks order I'd ever heard the other day. "Grande white mocha with five Equals,'' a woman in front of me said." My head hurts.

ESPN tries their hand at projecting the college bowl games. And unlike SI's picks, they've omitted one Wannstached Big East squad.

Stop me if you've heard this one before...Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears are in a car together...No I'm not joking, this actually just happened. And yes, I realize the irony after I just mentioned Peter King's non-sport rantings. The minor difference is that I'm 99.9% sure this audience would rather hear about Ms. Lohan, Ms. Hilton, and the former Mrs. Federline than hear about Peter King being perplexed by a crossword puzzle.

Chargers #1, E! True Hollywood Story, Moss Wants Out, Britney Parties with Paris

Peter King says the Chargers are the NFL's #1 team.
Some excerpts from "Point of Light: Western PA's Journal of Meaningful Living" and their 8-page article on Troy Polamalu. Some criticize his constant religious talk, but as long as it doesn't bother his teammates, I see no problem. I'd rather have a team full of Polamalus than a team full of Chris Henrys and Odell Thurmans.
