Wannstedt Interviewing with Browns

How does the image of Dave Wannstedt in Cleveland Browns colors look in your head? Well, that image may become a reality if the ex-Pitt coach joins Team Holmgren as the Browns' Defensive Coordinator, a job he will interview for this week.

With former coordinator Rob "Brother of Rex" Ryan already landing in Dallas, an opening exists for the gig, and Wannstedt already has some competition in former Buffalo and Chicago head coach Dick Jauron. Jauron spent 2010 as the Senior assistant/Defensive backs coach for Andy Reid in Philadelphia after coaching Buffalo from 2006-2009.

In addition to the Browns job, Wanny has also talked with the Bills and may also chat with the Chargers about employment opportunities in 2011, so it looks like he will be quickly turning the page from his time at Pitt. I'd prefer he not do it in Cleveland only because I like the guy, but a paycheck is a paycheck. It won't be a matter of if, but when Wannstedt chooses to return to his NFL roots.

Wannstedt Meets with the Buffalo Bills

Dave Wannstedt has no shortage of suitors in his apparent return to the NFL, and things just got a lot more interesting with the Buffalo Bills.

The Stache met Thursday with the team's defensive coaching staff, the first official meeting he's had with an NFL team since his dismissal resignation at Pitt. While the Bills have only a linebackers coach job open on that side of the ball, Wannstedt could possibly become the team's assistant head coach, and earn the salary that goes along with that title.

From the sound of things, Buffalo is very much interested in Wannstedt, but the feelers are out there to see if the feeling is mutual. Wanny was also getting interest from San Diego, Cleveland, and Carolina, but it sounds like the Chargers will probably get crossed off the list if they go with Greg Manusky as defensive coordinator.

Either way, the ball is squarely in Wannstedt's court, and it appears that he'll have some freedom in deciding where he will be collecting his next paycheck.

James Harrison Fined $25,000, Again

No, this is not a copy of an earlier post, although it could be by this point in the season: James Harrison has been fined yet again by the NFL.

This time, the penalty is $25,000 for a very questionable roughing the passer call committed while hitting Buffalo's Ryan Fitzpatrick on Sunday. That brings Harrison's season total to a whopping $125,000 on the year, a simply laughable amount especially in light of other penalties doled out (or not doled out) by the league in recent weeks. Richard Seymour was fined the same $25K for dropping the Steelers' quarterback after the play, while Cortland Finnegan and Andre Johnson were fined $25K for a helmets-off fight on Sunday. And that's really the same as what Harrison did or didn't do on Sunday? Please. And spare me the "track record" argument. Finnegan is well known as one of the league's dirtiest players, and the Steeler incident wasn't Seymour's first rodeo, either.

Is the NFL, which I once considered a smart league, really as clueless as it appears in the matters of discipline consistency?

STEELERS FREE AGENCY UPDATE

WR Arnaz Battle has officially been signed by the Steelers. Like earlier signee Will Allen, Battle is a special teams standout - an area I'm glad to see addressed - and will be reunited with his former position coach in San Francisco, Al Everest.

OT Jonathan Scott, a four-year veteran who's spent time with Detroit and Buffalo, reached agreement with the Steelers on a contract today. Again, this is a reunion of a player with a position coach, as the Steelers hired former Buffalo line coach Sean Kugler to the same position this offseason.

LB Larry Foote is meeting today with the Redskins, but apparently is wanted back in Pittsburgh to create depth at the position. The Steelers usually don't welcome back players once they've left, but this could be a rare occurrence of just that happening.

WR Antonio Bryant, the former Pitt standout, is visiting with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. The Bengals have been mentioned as possible landing spots for Terrell Owens and Brandon Marshall, so it looks like they're going to sign somebody to address their need at the position.

TODAY'S HEADLINES

PG calls for Nutting to sell: An open letter in the PG today signed by "More than a few Pirates fans" called for Bob Nutting to sell the team. This will probably make as much of a dent with the Nuttings as that walkout a couple years ago. [PG]

Steelers lose Whaley to Bills: Former Upper St. Clair and Pitt product Doug Whaley, the Steelers' pro scouting coordinator the past 10 years, is headed to Buffalo to work under new Bills GM Buddy Nix as the assistant GM. And if you don't yet know Buddy Nix, watch this video for a good laugh. [BuffaloNews.com]

Heinz is revamping ketchup packets: It took 40 years, but Heinz is finally making a change to the design of ketchup packets. Ketchup Packet 2.0 has a base that's more like a cup for dipping, a tear-off end for squeezing, and it holds three times as much ketchup than a traditional packet. Be still my beating heart. WPXI has the video. [WPXI]

What's up with Dante Taylor? I expected (rightly or wrongly) much more out of the blue-chip freshman, as did many others. Last night, Taylor failed to record a single point and played less than 10 minutes for the fifth consecutive game. At least he has nowhere to go but up. [KDKA]

RIP, Bullet Bill Dudley: "Bullet" Bill Dudley, a former Steeler and 1966 inductee into the Hall of Fame, just passed away after a short illness at the age of 88 in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The running back/defensive back/punt returner led the league in rushing, punt returns, and interceptions in 1946, when he was the NFL's MVP. He was also a B-25 and B-29 pilot in the Pacific in World War II. [PG]

TODAY'S HEADLINES

BRESMA orphans come to Pittsburgh: It's not sports-related, but the story of the Haitian orphans and the two Pittsburgh girls running their earthquake-ravaged orphanage has dominated the local news.

Children's Hospital posted some pics of the kids' trip to the Burgh, and they can be seen here. [Kiss 96.1 Morning Freak Show]

Big East Players of the Decade....were named by ESPN. Larry Fitzgerald was the only Pitt Panther to make the list, coming in at #2 behind Pat White.

Revis Island and Antonio Bryant were honorable mention, but the list of Panthers ends there. I guess the name "LeSean McCoy" did not ring any bells.

On another note, as E.J. Borghetti just pointed out, Pitt can arguably boast the top players at three NFL positions: WR (Fitzgerald), DB (Revis), and P (Andy Lee of San Fran). [ESPN Big East Blog]

A call to sign the Skipster: Ron Cook has proclaimed that the Steelers must sign K Jeff Reed, past incidents aside, basically because Nate Kaeding, Neil Rackers and Shayne Graham were terrible in the playoffs.

On his highly-publicized recent run-in with the law, Cook had this to say about Reed: "No matter what happened that night, it's nice to think it sobered up Reed and made him realize he has to do a better job watching his behavior under the bright public spotlight. It's nice to think he won't be an embarrassment to himself, his family and his team again."

I'll officially say that Reed won't be an embarrassment when he can go a calendar year without an appearance in the police blotter or in ridiculous photographs on blogs from coast to coast. [PG]

A call to sign Gonch: Mark Madden says the Penguins should pay up for D Sergei Gonchar, who's in the final year of his deal. With D Kris Letang also in the final year of his deal, Ray Shero's going to have a few tough choices coming in the very near future. [Times Online]

Gailey to Bills
: Former Steeler OC Chan Gailey will be the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills, introduced at 2 PM today. Gailey had most recently worked as Todd Haley's offensive coordinator in Kansas City, unceremoniously canned after three preseason games.

Gailey came at the recommendation of Bill Cowher, who chose another year with Shannon Sharpe instead of the Bills' job. That's what's known as a lose-lose situation. [ESPN]

STEELERS HIRE SEAN KUGLER AS O-LINE COACH

Jason La Canfora of NFL.com is reporting that the Steelers have hired Sean Kugler to replace the recently-dismissed Larry Zierlein as their offensive line coach.

Kugler was a four-year letter winner at UTEP from 1984-88 and returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach from 1993-2000. He spent 2001-2005 on the Detroit Lions coaching staff, working with both the offensive line and tight ends. In 2006, he served as the assistant head coach/offensive line coach for Boise State, the same Boise State team that beat Oklahoma 43-42 in the Fiesta Bowl.

He joined the Bills and Dick Jauron's staff in 2007 as the assistant offensive line coach, promoted to offensive line coach in 2008. In Buffalo, he worked with LT Jason Peters, a two-time Pro Bowl selection in 2007 and 2008 who was traded to the Eagles before the 2009 campaign. Kugler and the rest of the Bills staff were relieved of their duties following a 6-10 season that even Terrell Owens couldn't save.

In 2009, the Bills' line allowed 46 sacks, which placed them 28th in the league. For the record, the Steelers ranked 31st with 50 sacks allowed. So technically, this is an upgrade. But the Bills' QBs were hit 103 times, which was worse than only one other team - Jacksonville, with 125. In this category, the Steelers ranked 17th with 77 hits on the QB allowed.

The Bills did rank 8th in the league with a 4.4 yards per carry average in 2009, where the Steelers ranked 17th at 4.2 YPC. So far, that's the only stat where I can see somewhat of a difference in Kugler's favor. But I have no real insight into his philosophy or style, so I'm not going to rush to judgment in calling this a good or bad hire. I can't say I've broken down much tape of the Bills' O-line in my free time. This move will have to fall under the category of "wait and see", at least for me.

"BUFFALO" BILL COWHER? NOT QUITE

Is the Carolina Hurricanes' #1 fan/CBS analyst ready to jump back into the NFL? Maybe, but if Bill Cowher does, it will not be in Buffalo.

Cowher rebuffed the recent advances of Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson, who has also pursued Mike Shanahan in his search for a new head coach. Cowher is not certain about a return to coaching and will wait until the offseason to consider his future.

Wilson may now turn his attention to one of Cowher's mentors, former Browns/Chiefs/Chargers/Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer. The 66-year-old Schottenheimer, who was born in nearby Canonsburg, holds a 200-126-1 record in the NFL, but is a mere 5-13 in the playoffs. Former Cowher rival Brian Billick has also been mentioned as a possibility for the Buffalo job.

TUESDAY HEADLINES

Troy Polamalu is officially "questionable". Dr. Tomlin explained at his Tuesday press conference that the All-World safety has a strained PCL in his left knee, which leaves his status up in the air for Sunday's game. Luckily, the Steelers are playing Kansas City, so at least there's no need to rush him back. [PG]

Dwayne Bowe has been suspended. Normally this wouldn't even register on my radar, but the Chiefs wide receiver will start a four-game suspension on Sunday against the Steelers for violating the NFL’s policy against performance-enhancing substances. Judging by his numbers, I'd say they didn't work. [Yahoo!]

Arnold Harrison stars in "The Fall Guy". A head had to roll due to the Steelers' persistent ineptitude on kickoff coverage, and it happened to be the backup linebacker who's been on and off the roster since 2005. He will be replaced by Donovan Woods, an undrafted second-year linebacker from Oklahoma State who played in five games last season and was cut in this year's camp. [WTAE]

Jamie Dixon is your 2009 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year. The Pitt coach led the USA team to gold at the 2009 FIBA U-19 World Championship in July in Auckland, New Zealand. It was the first gold the US has won in the event since 1991, which helped get Dixon the award previously given to hoops luminaries such as Mike Krzyzewski, Larry Brown and Jim Boeheim. [Trib]

All is Not Lost, Steeler Nation. Even after Sunday's loss, the Steelers still rank a lofty sixth in ESPN's Power Rankings. A BCS bowl is still not out of the question. [ESPN]

Dick Jauron is Unemployed
. The 3-6 Bills canned their head coach days after a 41-17 loss to previously-left-for-dead Tennessee. I guess that Alex Van Pelt-guided offense hasn't really panned out in Buffalo. [SI.com]

A Whole New Meaning for "Ben Roethlisberger Jersey". A $2.2 million cocaine ring was recently busted in Monroeville, and it was discovered that the dealer and his associates were using sports-based code words to discuss their activities. Seven grams of cocaine would be ordered by asking for a "Ben Roethlisberger jersey." How Pittsburgh of them. [PG]

Don't Mess With Bears Fans.
Steeler fan Zach Heddinger of Pittsburgh claims he was poisoned and left blind after drinking at Kitty O'Shea's bar in downtown Chicago on September 20. After some good-natured ribbing with Bears fans that got out of hand, Heddinger claimed that he was given a drink as a peace offering and a short while later was passed out and rushed to a nearby hospital, his heart stopping four times. Yikes. [Deadspin]

LEODIS MCKELVIN GETS THE TOMMY MADDOX TREATMENT

In 2005, Tommy Maddox had a four-turnover game against Jacksonville that resulted in a Steeler overtime loss on a Rashean Mathis "walk-off" interception return for a touchdown. And Steeler Nation did not take it well. The story goes that garbage was tossed on the Maddox family's lawn and their kids were harassed at school - totally appropriate behavior if their father cannot meet the lofty quarterbacking standards of Pittsburgh. Accounts of the incidents vary - Mrs. Maddox says they didn't happen, while Mr. Maddox says they did - but whatever the case, it's made a great story/urban legend over the years.

On Monday night, with Buffalo on their way to an upset road win against the New England Patriots, kick returner Leodis McKelvin made the decision to run back the kick as opposed to taking a knee. And he kept fighting for more yards. And he fumbled. The rest, as you know, is history. Tom Brady threw a touchdown, New England won, and the universe was back in sync. They preserved their top spot on Peter King's Fine Fifteen for another week.

As for McKelvin, his popularity in Buffalo these days hovers between that of Kanye West and someone with the swine flu. And just to prove it, Bills fans took a page from the Pittsburgh fan manual and trashed McKelvin's yard.

These kinds of incidents are downright scary, if only for the effort someone goes through to carry out this plan. You've got to find the player's residence, load a bunch of trash into your vehicle, and arrange it on the player's lawn, all while trying not to be seen. I've heard of fan devotion before, but this hurdles across the line into fanaticism. It's unfortunate that people like this will be lumped in with all the other non-garbage-throwing Bills fans, but those are the breaks. At least Steeler Nation now has another franchise to keep us company in this unfortunate category.

VAN PELT GETS BILLS' OC JOB

The NFL is a copycat league, and a week before the first regular season games are played, not one, not two, but three offensive coordinators were canned. First was Tampa's Jeff Jagodzinski, who's managed to get fired twice in the span of nine months - no small feat in any profession. Next was the dismissal of former Steeler assistant Chan Gailey in Kansas City. And today, Buffalo canned Turk Schonert, which means that Bills QB coach and former Pitt Panther QB Alex Van Pelt will take the reigns of an offense that boasts such colorful personalities as Terrell Owens and Marshawn Lynch.

Van Pelt, a four-year starter at Pitt, holds the school records for most career passing yards (11,267), career completions (867) and career attempts (1,503). After failing to catch on with Bill Cowher and the Steelers as an 8th round draft pick in 1993, Van Pelt joined Buffalo in 1995 and served as a backup his entire career until his retirement after the 2003 season. Ironically, his first NFL win was against another Pitt icon, Dan Marino, in 1997. Van Pelt started 11 games in his NFL career, the high point being eight in 2001 under coach Gregg Williams, but would never start another after Drew Bledsoe's arrival in 2002.

Since retirement, Van Pelt has coached for the University of Buffalo and NFL Europe's Frankfurt Galaxy as well as doing some broadcasting work. He re-joined the Bills as part of Dick Jauron's staff in 2006 and has worked his way from Offensive Quality Control Coach to QB Coach to Coordinator since then.

He inherits an offense ranked 25th in yardage and 23rd in points in the NFL last season. The unit is 23rd and 27th respectively in the 2009 preseason, which probably helps explain Schonert's dismissal. The team does have a few weapons, most notably Owens, Lynch, Roscoe Parrish, and Josh Reed, but to anyone taking over a job that requires daily interaction with T.O., I wish him all the luck in the world with that.

DOMINATING

STEELERS (2-1) 17
BILLS (0-3) 0

I know you're not supposed to read too much into preseason games, but it's kind of hard to ignore the respective performances of the Steelers and the Bills in Saturday night's main event. Ben Roethlisberger looked as sharp as ever, carving the Buffalo secondary to the tune of 15-for-19 and 168 yards. Hines Ward had five catches for 74 yards and appeared as his usual, ageless self. The Steeler offense rolled up 209 yards in the first half, and the defense was equally as ferocious, allowing just 135 yards in the entire game while adding a James Farrior touchdown and two sacks of Bills QBs. It was as satisfying of a preseason performance as Mike Tomlin could have hoped for.

On the Buffalo side, I'm keeping in mind that they were playing without Terrell Owens, but I hope for their sake that Owens can also play offensive line and defense, because those appear to be two areas where the Bills are sorely lacking playmakers. Their line opened few holes for their running game, which finished with just 49 yards. And their defense had few bright spots to look back on, most notably an Aaron Maybin sack and a Keith Ellison recovery of a Rashard Mendenhall fumble. It looks like another long year in the cards for the always-suffering Bills fan.

Nursing a 17-0 halftime lead, the second half of the game featured a few highs and lows for the yet-to-be-pared Steeler roster.

On the plus side:

-Joe Burnett saved the Steeler shutout with a blocked field goal in the 4th quarter

-Charlie Batch was 7-for-9 and thoroughly thrilled announcer Edmund Nelson while doing so. His only incompletions were drops.

-Mike Reilly was 3-for-3 and performed well in limited 4th quarter action

-Stefan Logan had a 27-yard punt return

-Shaun McDonald converted two third downs into first downs with nine-yard receptions on both occasions

-Arnold Harrison and Donovan Woods combined for a sack of Ryan Fitzpatrick; Woods finished with five tackles on the night.

On the minus side:

-Isaac Redman was stuffed on a 4th-and-1, proving that contrary to popular belief, he can be stopped

-Dallas Baker and Brandon Williams had key drops

-Piotr Czech missed a 40-yard field goal

-The Steelers did not score in the second half

With three preseason contests now behind us, the Steelers close out the games that don't count on Thursday night with their annual meeting against the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 PM, and starter sightings should be limited. After that, the regular season stars just seven days later with a Titan invasion of Heinz Field. Judging by last night's performance, I'm pretty sure the Steelers will be ready.

RIEMERSMA FOR CONGRESS

Remember tight end Jay Riemersma? If not, here's a brief history: played college ball at Michigan, plucked by the Bills in the 7th round of the 1996 draft, and parted ways with Buffalo after the 2002 season. He signed with the Steelers in 2003 and played two seasons in Pittsburgh, starting nine games and suiting up for 22 of 32 regular season contests. I guess you would say his best season with the Steelers would be 2003, when he had 10 catches for 138 yards and one TD. After tearing his achilles tendon during the '04 season, he would never play in an NFL game again.

These days, Riemersma is following in the footsteps of Steve Largent, Lynn Swann, and Heath Shuler as pro football players who ventured into politics, as he announced his intention to run for Congress in his native Michigan. He will be running for U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra's 2nd District seat in southwestern Michigan, as Hoekstra will be running for governor in 2010.

STEELERS PRESEASON TO INCLUDE CARDINALS, T.O.

The NFL just released the 2009 preseason schedule, and I know no one cares about the preseason, but I'm going to mention it anyway.

The Steelers will open on August 13 at Heinz Field as they host the Arizona Cardinals on ESPN in a rematch of Super Bowl 43. Perhaps this time Kurt Warner won't throw a backbreaking interception before the end of the first half. We'll also get a good look at Bryant McFadden in his new uniform.

The Steelers then travel to Washington for some time with Albert Haynesworth in Week 2, followed by a home date with Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. The preseason closes up the weekend of September 3/4 with the Steelers traveling to take on the Carolina Panthers. That makes me smile, because a 2007 Steelers-Panthers preseason game would turn out to become one of my all-time favorite posts, forever burning the image of a Ricardo Colclough jersey in my brain for all the wrong reasons.

SLOPPY!

TORONTO BILLS 24
STEELERS 21

Buffalo's George Wilson takes down Kordell Stew...I mean Santonio Holmes

Yeah, yeah, I know it's the preseason...but boy, that was a sloppy game last night. The opening drive starts with an intercepted Ben Roethlisberger pass, then the Bills subsequently shove the ball directly down the Steelers' throats on not one, but TWO consecutive drives, one of 67 yards and the other 90 yards. Ugh. Never before would I think Trent Edwards-to-Robert Royal would be such an unstoppable combination, but on Thursday night it was just that.

Yes, the first team defense looked downright awful, with very few positives to take from the experience other than being the first visiting team to play at Toronto's Rogers Centre. I hope they enjoyed the trip, because they played like they were out all night the evening before. And while I'm on the defense, can someone please teach them HOW TO TACKLE?

Unfortunately, even more frustrating than the defense was the back-breaking 95-yard kickoff return TD from Buffalo's Leodis Mckelvin, who in the process became the first player named Leodis to ever run back a kick for a touchdown against the Steelers (I think). Yep, it was the old Steeler-killer known as special teams rearing its ugly head, and the Buffalo lead, which the Steelers had cut to three points, was immediately back up to 10.

The first-team offense had its ups and downs, fortunately ending on an "up" with a 40-yard Roethlisberger-to-San Antonio touchdown in the second quarter to cut Buffalo's lead in half. Hines Ward had a nice, 3-catches-for-48 yards evening, ending with what looked like a 10-pound ice pack on his ankle. Unfortunately, sideline reporter/meteorologist Jeff Verszyla, dressed in his finest argyle sweater (in the middle of August, no less), failed to ask Ward about the ankle during a subsequent interview. Fortunately, we do know that Hines is psyched for another season of The Hines Ward Show on KDKA!

Byron Leftwich entered the game in quarter two, with his fascinating delivery/wind-up and tendency to throw frozen ropes even if a guy is only five yards in front of him. He went 5-11 for 41 yards as he got his feet wet in game action, fumbling once but being bailed out as the Buffalo defender was out of bounds when recovering the loose ball. But he does have the unique ability to throw a pass that Nate Washington can catch, which isn't as easy as it sounds. That in itself is worth a roster spot.

Dennis Dixon had quite the intriguing game, with a 47-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter and a total of 79 yards passing on six completions. As my brother noted during the game, if you said during last year's college football campaign that the Steelers would get Dixon, Rashard Mendenhall, AND Limas Sweed in this year's draft, I'm sure no one would've believed you. As I've learned many times, never underestimate the power of Kevin Colbert.

Speaking of Mendenhall, the Man Being Force-Fed By Fans and Media As a Power Back ran for 30 yards on 11 carries, with a long of nine and one touchdown. He did not return any kicks, as those duties were split among Willie Reid and Mewelde Moore.

So there you have it: some sloppy plays, some nice plays, and a 24-21 loss to show for it. It was a performance not worthy of victory and that's exactly how it played out. Next on the schedule is a meeting with the Favre-less Minnesota Vikings on Saturday the 23rd at 8 PM in Minnesota. Hope the defense makes the flight.

Game Notes:

--This was quite the interesting game from a ticket buying-and-selling point of view. From ESPN:

"The announced attendance of 48,434 was about 5,000 short of capacity, and considered a disappointment for series organizers, who are paying the Bills an average $9.75 million per game to show the NFL that Toronto can be home to a permanent franchise. Steep ticket prices, ranging from $75 to $575, didn't help. Hours before the game, fans were purchasing tickets with a $575 face value for as little as $90."

People aren't going to pay $575 in a poor economy to watch Dennis Dixon and JP Losman go head-to-head for a bulk of the game? Color me surprised.

--Anthony Smith tackled four Bills and zero of his teammates not expecting to be tackled. We should have no worries about Smith though, because Edmund Nelson re-assured us that Smith "is a football player."

--Nelson's best line of the night was when he described a play as a "nekkid bootleg".

--Your leading Steeler receiver, yardage-wise: Dallas Baker, with 57 yards on three grabs.

--Lawrence Timmons was one positive from a lax defensive performance, wreaking some havoc to the tune of 8 tackles and a sack. Too bad he got the 2003 Troy Polamalu Honorary Rookie Bust label placed on his head last year by impatient fans and media.

--Last night's results from the Great Pittsburgh Punt-Off: Paul Ernster 1 for 45, Mitch Berger 4-190 (47.5).

--Last night's results from the Great Pittsburgh Punt Return-Off: Mr. Drummond 7 yards, Travis Williams 7 yards, Willie Reid 6 yards, and M. Moore (I'm assuming it's Mewelde Moore and not Mandy Moore) 2 yards. That's an inspired showing.

--Speaking of Polamalu, I'm a big fan and maybe I'm crazy, but....is he becoming a little high-maintenance at this point? Just a little?

--While watching his press conferences, I've becomed intrigued with Mike Tomlin's cadence. Has anyone else noticed this? He talks in brief pauses, each sentence sounding more important than the last. I constantly feel like I'm not watching football, I'm watching a movie about football.

--After the game, I caught myself again watching the Dallas Cowboys' 2008 training camp documentary, Hard Knocks, on HBO. Let me tell you, they're not suffering from any confidence problems in that organization.

--Now back to the PBC Blog for the Pedro Alvarez watch all day.

Please add your comments on the game or email mondesishouse@gmail.com with your two cents.

Steelers Move to 6-1 in Preseason

STEELERS (2-0) 26

BILLS (0-2) 3

Before I get into my Steeler recap, congratulations to the eventual Super Bowl XLII champions, the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a job well done on Sunday, surrendering 51 points to the mighty Cleveland Browns, a franchise so unorganized that they traded their opening-day QB just a few days after he started the season. Keep up the good work, and remember, it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you plan your touchdown celebrations.
To the angst-ridden Browns fans, enjoy this day. I guess you don't need Brady Quinn after all. And don't worry about dumping your opening day QB. All Belichick disciples do it.

As for the Steeler game, it was far less interesting and ran exactly to the script everyone imagined. The Steelers wore throwback uniforms, the Steelers dominated on defense, the Steelers moved the ball on offense, the Steelers won the game. Game, set, match, fold up your 75th Anniversary Terrible Towel, wash off your face paint, and drive home safely. Just remember to give your keys to your sober friend. And if he happens to wreck your Bentley on the Parkway, protocol says you leave it there and run away. And by protocol I mean Lance Briggs.

With few exceptions, the Steelers have looked pretty solid through two weeks. They're winning the games they're supposed to win, which is more than you can say about Cincinnati. And after all of two weeks, they're alone on top of the AFC North. One of these days, they're actually going to get a challenging opponent. Today was not one of those days.
The story of the day on offense was Willie Parker, who ran for 126 yards on 23 carries. Of course, in Steeler analyst speak, you must exclude his 24-yard run and his 21-yard run and state that he only had 81 yards on 21 carries. But even that is a solid effort.
Large Benjamin, aside from a minor brain freeze where he was intercepted by a Buffalonian, had an efficient, 21-34, 242-yard, 1 TD performance. No, he didn't throw for 6 TDs, so he still remains a lesser QB than Carson Palmer. But a nice game nonetheless.
On to the notes...
--The Fighting Tomlins won their 500th game in team history today. They remain neck and neck with Joe Paterno in that category.
--It was a bad day for Buffalo. The Bills lose and O.J. gets arrested. What next, allegations that Marv Levy was using spy cameras during the '90s?
--Least favorite drive of the game: the one that featured calling Carey Davis' number on first and second down.
--Your eyes did not deceive you. The Bills have a member of their training staff who is a "little person". His name is Chris Fischetti, and he's a graduate of Penn State.
--Say what you want about the Internet's Most Famous Kicker, but without him, it's a scoreless tie at halftime. That red zone offense needs a tweak or two.
--Matt Spaeth is on pace for 16 TDs this year. He's the Cris Carter of the Steelers: all he does is catch touchdowns.
--Nice game by Hopewell and Penn State grad Paul Posluszny, with a total of 12 tackles for the Bills. But he just wouldn't be the right fit in the Steelers' defensive scheme.
--2-0 San Francisco comes to town next week. We'll get a firsthand look at fantasy wunderkind Frank Gore, freakish TE Vernon Davis, and the small, girly hands of Alex Smith.
Around the NFL and college

--Wanny, you're killing me. You can't keep teasing me with these close games against big-time programs. With solid play at the QB position, Pitt beats Michigan State handily. With Kevan Smith...

Oh well. At least Shady is the real deal.

--Nice work by the Michigan Wolverines. This time they BEAT the I-AA team.

--Speaking of the Wolverines, they face an opponent many of you know and love next weekend, Penn State. The Nittany Lions also played a team from Buffalo this week, and the results were roughly the same as the Steelers'. So let's recap: PSU has beaten Florida International, Notre Dame, and Buffalo, three of the worst teams in D-I football. Could the Michigan game be more interesting than it looks on paper?

--Quick, whose defense is worse: the Cincinnati Bengals' or the Louisville Cardinals'?

--Look everyone, Vince Carter, I mean, Randy Moss, cares again! If there's one thing that I love, it's an athlete that tries if and when he wants to.

--I hate New England as much as the next guy, but San Diego has no shortage of loudmouths and trash talkers on their roster, none of whom back it up when it matters. This was allegedly the game that they've been waiting their entire offseason to play. Your work really paid off, guys.

--Note to Keyshawn Johnson: you can stop defending Bill Belichick now. Please. You're embarrassing yourself.

--2-0, bandwagon-in-the-making teams: Houston (HOUSTON!), Detroit (DETROIT!), Green Bay, Denver, San Francisco, Dallas, Indianapolis, New England, Pittsburgh.

--0-2, "What's wrong with ______? " teams: Buffalo, Kansas City, Atlanta, St. Louis, NY Giants, NY Jets, New Orleans, Miami, Oakland.

--Early candidate for most annoying commercial of the 2007 NFL season: iPod's "1234", narrowly edging "Viva Viagra".
