Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week

It's hard to believe, but the time has come for another edition of Best of the Web, your weekly all-you-can-digest trip around the world of Pittsburgh sports. Inside this week: a heartbreaker for Robert Morris (and controversy for their old coach), a rematch for Pitt, trouble for Terrelle, Pascal Dupuis' entry into the world of food, How Hines Ward Celebrated His Birthday, the sudden retirement of a WVU legend, and much, much more. As usual, we're going 20 links deep, so buckle up.

Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week

It's a busy week in Pittsburgh sports, with the Pens, Panthers, and Pirates in full swing, and the Steelers making some moves while football's still in business. That means I've got ample material to choose from for this week's edition of Best of the Web, which also covers the Hines Ward Dancing With the Stars saga, a familiar face interviewing with the Steelers, the arrival of the Pittsburgh Power season, Pittsburgh's world-class rudeness, and much, much more.

[93.7 The Fan at CBS Pittsburgh]

And if that's not enough, here's a bonus 21st link: The Top 25 Charlie Sheen quotes from his first week of explaining how awesome Charlie Sheen is. Because much like Charlie, this list is a winner.

The Pirates Will Spend Money on Talent...If You Give It To Them

Someday, an enterprising writer is going to compile a book of ridiculous quotes made by Frank Coonelly, Bob Nutting, and Neal Huntington. There's enough for at least a couple chapters in it already, and if they keep up at this pace, the book may be done by next week. Witness the latest gold min from Coonelly's interview with PiratesProspects.com:

Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week

It’s time for another buffet of links, going the usual 20 deep, in this week’s Best of the Web. This edition is rather Penguin-centric, with news on last night’s drama-fest at the CEC and the injury to Brooks Orpik, as well as trade rumors, a new job for a former Penguin executive, and high ratings for NBC’s Pens-Hawks game on Sunday. We’ve also got Steeler free agent talk, an absurd article on Big Ben, a look at the upcoming Pitt-WVU hoops game, and Jason Kendall being Jason Kendall, among many other tidbits. Because everyone loves tidbits, right?

Weekend Wrapup

By my count, this is three disappointing weekends in a row in the world of Pittsburgh sports. Two weekends ago, we had the Super Bowl, which we will speak no more of. Last weekend, it was two Penguin losses (one making a mockery of the sport) and the death of Fam-a-Lee skipper Chuck Tanner, the last Pirate manager to win a World Series. This weekend, wins were elusive to both of the Pittsburgh teams in action. A recap after the jump:

MH Joins the Big Lead Sports Family

As the Mondesi's House Extreme Makeover continues, another little piece fell into place today as the site officially became a part of the Big Lead Sports family of websites. I felt that the opportunities offered by BLS would really help the site in the long run, and I am tremendously excited to now be associated with one of the most popular sites in the sports blogosphere, The Big Lead.

I realize this week has been very choppy in terms of coverage due to the changes that have taken place and will be taking place, but everything should be back to normal by Monday. And by the way, if there are any other changes you'd like to suggest, please feel free to do so via email or Twitter. Thanks again for your patience during the little remodeling and your continued support of MH.

Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week

It’s time for another round of 20 links devoted to all things Pittsburgh, spanning from Eric Godard to Frank The Tank to the great Ryan Doumit. Yes, no stone is left unturned in this week's Best of the Web, including news on a surprising Steeler coaching candidate, a nice sprinkling of some top 10, 50, and 100 lists, and most importantly, news on the new Dark Knight movie possibly coming to Pittsburgh and how the city continues its long-standing tie to the Batman franchise. You know, all the hard-hitting stuff you've come to know and love from me.

MH Site Redesign Input Wanted

I've been very busy of late using my MH time towards an upcoming redesign/reboot to the site, which should slowly be rolling out soon. I'm sure you've noticed the lack of regular posts, but I have only so much time to use here, and I'd like to think of these as "bigger-picture" site projects. I'm happy to report that the pieces are gradually falling into place and the end result will be a much improved product that's more user-friendly.

With that in mind, I'd certainly appreciate your opinions on what you would like from the site going forward. I'm talking design, content, or any other changes you think would enhance your experience. I did this with my last major redesign a few years ago and received very valuable feedback that I was able to implement and continue to use to this day. I'm hopeful that we can get similar results this time around. I sincerely thank you in advance for any input you can share.

If you would like to share some thoughts on the site, please send your ideas to:

Wrapping Up a Rough Weekend

From losing Chuck Tanner to Friday Night at the Fights to the Penguins' bus breaking down in New York, this was not a memorable weekend in the annals of Pittsburgh sports, save for the Pitt win over 'Nova. But we shall fight on. A few thoughts:

Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week

It's link time, Yinzers. And we'll recover from a crushing Super Bowl loss with...link after link of injured or disciplined Penguins missing from the lineup for varying periods of time! Great!

Other than that, we've got the Steelers' first loss of the offseason, a famous beard meeting its demise, a guess on who gets the Steelers' franchise tag, an update on the Rinku and Dinesh movie, a new breakfast treat from a friendly Penguin, multiple surgeries for a Steeler, a ridiculous February defeat for the Pirates, and much, much more. As always, my message is the same: enjoy responsibly. Don't link and drive.

Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week

A big thanks goes out to Hines Polamalu, who takes us into this week's Steeler/SB45-heavy edition of Best of the Web over at The Fan website. But don't fret, I found space to talk Pitt recruiting, the awesome goalie fight in the Pens-Islanders game, and much, much more among this week's 20 links. I must say, that fight was so awesome, it's worth mentioning a second time. That's going to be an all-timer in the pantheon of Pittsburgh Sports YouTube Clips.

Joe Beimel's Pittsburgh Return Kicks Off PirateFest

Making a big splash on the eve of PirateFest 2011, the Buccos have reached a deal with Duquesne U. product and former Pirate pitcher Joe Beimel, who will sign with the team today.

After pitching with the Pirates in middle relief from 2001-2003, Beimel has also pitched for Minnesota, Tampa Bay, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington, and Colorado. He holds a career mark of 23-31 with an ERA of 4.16 and will fill a need for lefty relievers in the Pirate pen. Terms of the deal have not been made public yet, but for comparison's sake, Beimel made $850K with the Rockies last season. So the deal probably won't break the bank.

As for the other half of this story, PirateFest stars tomorrow, running from 10 AM- 8 PM on Saturday and 12 PM - 5 PM on Sunday at the David Lawrence Convention Center. Tickets are $12, and a list of attractions is as follows:
  • Meet new Pirates manager Clint Hurdle
  • Free Autographs by current players and alumni
  • First chance to buy single game tickets to 2011 home games
  • All fans get a 2011 Wall Calendar, Pocket Schedule and PirateFest Program.
  • "Ask Pirates Management" Q&A sessions
  • Photo opportunities with your favorite Pirates
  • Giant Eagle Kids Fun Zone, featuring many activities for children
  • "Lost Treasures" area with game-used jerseys, bats, balls and more for sale.
  • A charity silent auction with proceeds to benefit Pirates Charities.
  • Inflatable rides, batting cages and carnival games.
  • New contests like "We Are Fam-A-Lee Feud" and "Minute To Win It"
  • Youth baseball clinics, face painters and much more

2010: The Year in Pittsburgh Sports

With 2010 winding down and my urge to create an archive of it in high gear, I combined both into this post,  a blow-by-blow account of the past 12 months in Pittsburgh sports. It's way too long, and there's a lot of stuff I felt was worth mentioning that probably wasn't, but brevity has never been one of my strong suits. It took me hours upon hours to compose, so I hope it serves some purpose, if nothing else than to bring back a lot of great (and some not-so-great) memories from the year that was.

JANUARY:

Ben Roethlisberger put up $17,000 in airfare, hotels and other transportation costs to send the Thomas Jefferson Youth Football League's Little Jaguars to the Big Dog Bowl, a championship tournament in Los Angeles organized by Snoop Dogg.

Pitt upset #5 Syracuse, 82-72, at the Carrier Dome, getting 24 points from Ashton Gibbs.

The Steelers wrapped up the 2010 campaign with a 30-24 win against Miami behind 3 TD passes from Big Ben.

ST coach Bob Ligashesky was relieved of his duties by the Steelers, as was O-line coach Larry Zierlein.

The 5-12-3 Robert Morris hockey team swept #1 Miami (OH) two times in the course of one weekend.

The Pirates signed 38-year-old P Brendan Donnelly to a one-year deal, and also picked up P DJ Carrasco, P Octavio Dotel, and OF Ryan Church.

Randy Fitchner was named as the Steelers' new QB coach, replacing Ken Anderson. They also hired Al Everest as the new special teams coach and Sean Kugler for the O-line.

New York Islanders defenseman Andy Sutton sat two games and forfeited more than $31K in salary for a hit on Pascal Dupuis.

Bobby Bragan, manager of the Pirates in 1956-57, passed away in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 92.

Matt Cooke scored on a power-play goal with 1:47 left in the third period to lead the Penguins past the Flyers, 2-1, in front of a national NBC audience.

The Bill Mazeroski statue was announced, to be unveiled later in 2010.

Former Pitt Panther and Steeler Jerry Olsavsky returned to the Steelers as a defensive assistant coach

Talk of Mario Lemieux buying the Pirates burned up the internet

Total attendance for PirateFest was 15,398, up 271 from last year, with a 1,200-person boost over last year's final day.

57-year-old Wayne Persang, formerly of Pittsburgh, rolled a perfect 300 game while bowling in a league at Countryside Lanes in Clearwater, Florida on January 11. On January 13th at Highland Lakes Golf Course in Palm Harbor, Persang aced the fifth hole

The Penguins overcame a 46-save performance from Jimmy Howard and outlasted the Detroit Red Wings by a 2-1 count in OT in front of a national NBC audience.

Three Steelers were named to the NFL's Team of the Decade

Best of the Web: The Top 20 Links of the Week
