Wiz Khalifa Covers Rolling Stone

Pittsburgh's favorite rapper, Steeler-loving Wiz Khalifa, continued to ride his recent tsunami of success, getting his second "Rookie of the Year"-themed cover in the last four months in the form of the latest issue of Rolling Stone. He was also named ROY by The Source back in November and celebrated with a simliarly memorable cover:

Wiz Khalifa's Black and Yellow Hits #1

As predicted, Wiz Khalifa's Pittsburgh-themed smash hit, Black and Yellow, rose to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, so at least the city ended up with a big national victory in one form or another by week's end. 

Wiz (no relation to timeless Pirate legend Sammy Khalifa) rose from last week's #4 slot, bumping Grenade by Bruno Mars from the #1 spot. This is the 18th week that Black and Yellow has been on the chart, and probably the last time a thinly-veiled Steeler fan song gets such national love.

Khalifa is also getting another magazine cover to his name, sharing the latest front of Vibe magazine with the aforementioned Bruno Mars and B.O.B. And next up for the Allderdice grad is the movie High School, where he co-stars with like-minded pot/Steeler lover Snoop Dogg.

Monday Steeler Quick Hits: Keisel Beard Me!

In unsurprising news, Hines Ward has no plans to retire.

Call it a gut instinct, but I just don't see his Pittsburgh career ending well.  He'll feel like he can still play when the evidence shows otherwise someday. Then he'll feel insulted by the Steelers, he'll get released, and then he'll play for some team like Baltimore. It's a recurring nightmare I have, but I've seen the Hines Movie too many times. Any perceived slight makes him want it more. [PG+]

VIDEO: Wiz Khalifa Performs Black and Yellow on George Lopez

In case you missed it, here's video of Wiz Khalifa's first official late-night performance, which came last night on  TBS's Lopez Tonight, which I've previously only watched because I was too lazy to change the channel after Conan. But Wiz rocked the place as much as you could rock it for a studio audience. And he had black and yellow hair, too. That's gotta count for something on the coolness scale.

Friday Steeler Quick Hits

Lots of good stuff on the AFC Championship today, here are a few:

-Wiz Khalifa will be performing the smash Black and Yellow before the game on Sunday. As Bill Simmons would say, "Enthusiastically co-sign." This should be the Steeler anthem for the next decade. Debate closed.

 

-Mayor Steelerstahl is back at it again, this time debating his football bet with Mayor Bloomberg and appearing on ESPN's First Take. He works hard for the money. [96.1 Kiss Freak Show]

-Rod Woodson was on with Seibel and Starkey and said he wouldn't put Big Ben in his top-5 list of QBs. Following that, Sean Salisbury was on the show and said he values winning the most in a QB, then ranked Philip Rivers 4th and Ben fifth. Let's say I'll enthusiastically agree to disagree with these two gentlemen. [93.7 The Fan]

-Bill Cowher picked the Jets to beat the Steelers. Obviously, this was an attention grab. Really, would it be a stand-alone story in the Trib if he picked the Steelers? [Trib]

-Sports media members are all writing the same Ben Roethlisberger story, says Fire Rick Reilly.

-And on that note, are the Steeler fans in this photo really how the national media sees us? I'd say that's bordering on incredibly sad. What's the message here? "OK Ben, you have to answer for your misdeeds to these grown men dressed up like it's Halloween."

Wiz Khalifa Wins Rookie of the Year, Wears Penguins Hat

Adding his name to the list of Pittsburghers who've won Rookie of the Year awards, the Burgh's own Wiz Khalifa recently grabbed the honor from The Source magazine, and covers their latest issue donning a vintage Penguins hat. For an extra touch, he added an expression on his face that looks like he just smelled dog crap. Nice.

Alongside Khalifa is the cartoonish Rick Ross, the plus-sized Kimbo Slice-lookalike who was awarded Man of the Year honors. So sincere congratulations go out to him.
