TODAY'S HEADLINES

Ben Roethlisberger made an unexpected cameo on the season premiere of South Park last night, in a star-filled episode that also featured Tiger Woods, Charlie Sheen, Bill Clinton, and a host of others. Looks like the next airing is at 10:30 PM eastern on Comedy Central on Thursday night, and I would highly advise you to tune in.*And a MAJOR thanks to Dug E. Fresh at Get Fresh Designs for the screenshot. Check out his site and buy some of his shirts!
The Pittsburgh Penguins fell to 0-6 against the New Jersey Devils this season with a depressing 5-2 loss on the road. The Penguins were committing turnovers at a Delhommean rate, resulting in five breakaways on the Devils' first 12 shots.
Marc-Andre Fleury was yanked with 9:43 left in the second period, surrendering four goals on just 12 shots. Brent Johnson saw just five shots the rest of the way, and thankfully stopped the bleeding, although the Pens did give up an empty netter.
Pittsburgh was playing without Evgeni Malkin (foot) and Eric Godard (groin), but this might just be a case of a team being in their heads. After Chris Kunitz got the scoring started in the first period, the Devils would score the next four, building what became an insurmountable lead in the process. Ruslan Fedotenko would score his 10th in the third period, but it was too little, too late. Game over, season sweep. And it doesn't get any easier, with the much-anticipated Boston rematch pending on Thursday night. [ESPN]
Willie Parker is visiting the St. Louis Rams, says ESPN's Adam Schefter. The market has been slow for the veteran back, who has visited only Washington so far. Ironically, it was an injury suffered against the Rams in 2007 that derailed Parker's career, but at this point, work is work. He would be backing up Steven Jackson, with any starting opportunities around the league apparently unavailable. [Twitter]
Kevin Hart had a disastrous outing for the Buccos on Wednesday, walking six of 12 batters in 1 2/3 against the Tigers. Hart has now walked 13 hitters in 4 2/3 spring innings.
On the plus side, Andrew McCutchen finished 2-for-3 and stole his third base of the spring, and Pedro Alvarez doubled and scored in the seventh. [MLB.com]
The Duquesne Dukes are done for the season, losing to Princeton 65-51 in the first round of the CBI tournament. Damian Saunders led the Dukes with 14 points and nine rebounds. Duquesne finished the season 16-16. [PG]
Robert Mitchell, the 2006-07 A-10 Rookie of the Year at Duquesne before transferring to Seton Hall, was arrested on Tuesday in Newark, NJ and charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon, according to a law enforcement official in Essex County, N.J.
The chilling report from the NY Times says "Mitchell and another person were accused of breaking into a home in South Orange, N.J., duct-taping eight people and stealing credit and debit cards, driver’s licenses, cellphones, digital cameras and about $300." [NY Times]
Mike Tomlin checked out Tim Tebow at Florida's pro day on Wednesday. Let the insane speculation begin. [WPXI]
Cal Dunlap, the attorney for Andrea McNulty, has been contacted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, which wants a sit-down with McNulty regarding the new Ben Roethlisberger allegations.
Dunlap would have none of it, telling TMZ.com "We believe the facts alleged by our client are already in public documents. A case in Georgia ought to be brought or not brought on its own merits." [TMZ]

NEWS AND NOTES

--Here's Mr. Pretend Steeler Fan continuing his Summer 2009 Tour of Phoniness by posing with Philadelphia Flyers players while wearing an Eagles jersey. Yes, he truly bleeds black and gold. [96.1 Morning Freak Show Blog]
--Sidney Crosby had a rather unique birthday celebration. And here I thought he was going to spend it getting a free birthday burger at Red Robin. [PG]
--Matt Capps blew an eighth-inning lead and subsequently nailed Albert Pujols in the Pirates' 7-3 loss to St. Louis on Sunday. That's eight losses in a row for the Battlin' Bucs, who are thankfully off on Monday. Although I would put decent odds on this team finding a way to lose on an off day.[PBC Blog]
--The always-popular Steeler goal-line drills went down this weekend, and the defense got the best of the offense, 4-3. The bad news? Frank the Tank and Rashard Mendenhall could not penetrate the first-team defense. The good news? The first-team defense was able to hold off power backs like Frank the Tank and Rashard Mendenhall. [Steelers.com]

BIG BEN: "THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL"
Ben Roethlisberger just issued a brief statement regarding the recent allegations made by Andrea McNulty, and here is the transcript:
Roethlisberger said, "I did not sexually assault Andrea McNulty."
"Saturday was the first that I learned of her accusations. Her false and vicious accusations are an attack on my family and on me"
"I would never, ever force myself on a woman."
"I will fight to protect my family and my reputation."
"I'm not going to discuss my private life or this civil case in the media."
"I'll respond to her outrageous allegations in the appropriate forum."
"I have an obligation to our fans, my teammates to my coaches and everyone in the organization to remain focused on the Pittsburgh Steelers and I will do that."
"The allegations against me are reckless and false."
"As much as I would like to answer everyone's questions, I will respect the legal process and I am confident that the truth will prevail"

The press conference will take place in Pittsburgh at 11 AM PT and we'll be live streaming the entire thing on our website."

UPDATED: ROETHLISBERGER ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

Last night, word broke of a Nevada casino employee filing a civil defamation lawsuit against Ben Roethlisberger, accusing him of sexually assaulting her in July, 2008. Roethlisberger is not facing any criminal charges, as it is unclear whether or not the accuser, Andrea McNulty, ever tried to file a criminal complaint.
Roethlisberger's attorney, David Cornwell (who has also represented Saints RB Reggie Bush and Browns WR Donte Stallworth and was a finalist for the NFLPA Executive Director position), has issued the following statement:
"This weekend Andrea McNulty served Ben Roethlisberger with a civil complaint accusing him of sexually assaulting her in July 2008. Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone; especially Andrea McNulty. The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct. If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated.
"Ben will not be baited into a public discussion about his personal life, but we will defend him vigorously. The limited value that Ms. McNulty derived from public disclosure of these viciously false allegations is the only value she will ever receive from Ben in this case."
Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett had this to say to WTAE:
"We are aware of the allegations but cannot comment on the specifics of the case. We've been told Ben's side of the story and we fully support him at this time."
I hate, repeat, hate having to discuss stories like this, as I'd much rather talk about actual on-field action, "hot-stove"-type discussion, and the lighter side of sports (you know, like Big Ben quarterbacking against Shaq). Unfortunately, we're closer to the beginning than to the end of this, so strap in for the unpleasantries that usually accompany a case of this nature.
