Catch the Monthly Celebration of the 1960 World Series

It's been a few days since someone has celebrated the 1960 World Series, but that long drought will soon come to an end. Credit for that slump-busting goes to Bing Crosby, who had the foresight to get a video of Game Seven made for home viewing 50 years ago. And because Crosby also had the foresight to keep those films, Pittsburgh gets another party, happening November 13 at the Byham Theater, when the tapes will be shown to the public for the first time.

My cynicism aside, I must admit that the story of the long-lost game films being found in Crosby's wine cellar is pretty cool.  No known full copies of the game existed before the find, and the allure of the Crosby name surely adds to the folklore of this particular video.

MLB also thought so, because they're putting on the event, which features Bob Costas, Bill Mazeroski, Dick Groat and Bobby Richardson, among others, in the house. Costas will be doing interviews throughout the night for an upcoming special on the MLB Network and a subsequent DVD release.

A limited number of tickets are available for the event, and those interested should send an e-mail to Game7onMLBN@mlb.com for more information.

It's a cool event, no doubt. But i can't help but view it as just a distraction from the current product. I wasn't around for the 1960 WS, so there's no nostalgia for me.

Bob Nutting totally planted a tape of this in Bing Crosby's wine cellar because he knew that in 50 years he'd own the Pirates, they'd be terrible, and he'd need something to distract people from the current product.

Haha, nice point Nate.

Your optimism for the Buccos astounds me, but you got it right this time.

I'm not really all that optimistic, is the thing. I honestly think the Pirates will be bad for about 2 more years, have about 3 years of legitimacy and if they win anything awesome, then they'll have to tear it down and start again. The sad state of baseball economics, even when you do something right, if you're not the Yankees you can't do it for long.

It's just that sometimes the lengths people will go to to make Bob Nutting look like Snidely Whiplash makes me laugh.

If they compiled a book of all the things Nutting's either said, done or hasn't done to paint himself in a bad light, it would be as thick as Charlie Sheen's prenup. It's more of a stretch to make him look like anything less IMO and that's why he has fewer supporters than detractors. Sometimes all it takes is reading the standings year after year to get a good feel for the obvious.

I'm not saying I like the guy, I'm just saying I don't think he's sitting in a fortified, undisclosed location plotting the demise of the Pittsburgh Pirates. If only the Justice League could save them! Alas, I guess Bob Nutting is too minor of a villain for Super Man and co.
