AT THE FAN: 10 PITTSBURGH ATHLETES WHO WERE LUCKY THEY MISSED THE INTERNET ERA

In light of the most recent Ben Roethlisberger case, which spread like a bad case of poison ivy throughout the internet, I chose one of my all-time favorite topics for this week's feature at 93.7 The Fan: Pittsburgh athletes who dodged a major bullet by not playing in the internet era.

I was able to explore some of the all-time great off-the-field stories of Pittsburgh athletes of the past for the piece, and some of them will frankly blow your mind. Like Dave Parker's drug dealer getting an invite to the Pirates' New Year's Eve party in 1981, or Tim Worley getting suspended for the entire 1992 season because he missed mandatory drug tests to attend the NBA All-Star Game. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

We've already wrapped the discussion portion of this topic on the Morning Show (which should have a podcast version up soon), but please check this one out...if anything, it shows that athletes these days aren't so much different from those of prior generations.

The fact that the Pirate Parrot was the middle man in the coke trafficking has always been near and dear to my heart.

If I had to name 1 team, ever, from any time and town that we should be glad wasn't around in the internet ERA it would be the '86 Mets.

I can't even begin to imagine how they would have projected in an era of social media and blogging. Gooden, Strawberry, Hernandez, Nails, Roger McDowell. What a team.

I have to bring this up on one of these 'the fan' posts... Sometimes i catch the 'vinnie & cook' show around lunchtime, &... well... can you tell them that a regular occurring portion of their show may mean more than they intend? I'm referring, of course, to the "hot lunch" portion of their show. Now, i'm not particularly a fan of their show, so i find calling part of their show the "hot lunch" to be apt, however, maybe they should go onto urban dictionary one of these days?

Maybe during Steelers season they can have the Cleveland Steamer update on how the Browns are doing.
