NEWS AND NOTES

Pens fan illustrates dislike of Flyers, specifically Scott Hartnell.

--Continuing an unreal week of hockey, the Pens beat the Flyers, 5-4, in a dramatic shootout at the Igloo. Kid Crosby continued his dominance of the Flyers, leading the way with two goals. Geno Malkin extended his scoring streak with his 6th goal of the season, Matt Cooke added his first, and Dany Sabourin was perfect in the shootout. The Pens are now 10-4-2 and just four points out of the conference's top spot.

--Could this be the greatest autographed baseball ever? Sure sounds like it. [Pittsburgh's Black and Gold]

--The Steelers drop to #5, Chargers #20 in the latest RCS NFL Power Ranking Averages. [Real Clear Sports]

--John McCain and Barack Obama will appear at halftime of the Steelers-Redskins Monday night game. It's about time someone put these guys on TV. [Shutdown Corner]

THE GRUELING BYE WEEK

--Yesterday, the Penguins did their annual ticket home deliveries, and Sidney Crosby announced that he's going to live with Mario Lemieux yet again, making it the most dominant hockey household in the world for a fourth consecutive season.

--The Pirates lost again to Houston, 7-4, and an injury suffered during the game will probably knock Tom Gorzelanny out for the season. Somehow, I doubt that this will have as much of an effect as the injury another athlete named Tom suffered this week. [Trib]
--Today marks seven years since 9/11/01, and presidential candidate John McCain is in the area to remember Flight 93. [Trib]

THE NEWS

--Nate McLouth-Pujols hit a three-run home run in the 9th inning, leading the Buccos to a 6-4 win at Dodger Stadium.
--Stay away from Adam LaRoche...he's got the flu.
--Pitt is a #1 seed in next year's NCAA Tournament, according to Joe Lunardi's totally useless projections. In fact, they're playing the winner of the play-in game, making them the #1 overall seed.
--Ron Cook has much love for MAF. Don't we all?
--Proving that Penn State is not the only school with a few troubled athletes, safety Sherod Murdock has been suspended indefinitely from the Pitt football team for disciplinary reasons, and offensive tackle Jason Pinkston was involved in an on-campus altercation over the weekend.
--6-foot-5, 229 pound WR Mario Urrutia visited the Steelers on Monday, bringing the total of players who've visited the team to approximately 5,041.
--The Pittsburgh Passion open their 2008 season on Saturday at Central Pennsylvania.
--John McCain was kickin' it at CMU.
--Trying to keep up with the Spears family, Ashlee Simpson is now with child.
--Brady Quinn buddy Bret Michaels was the subject of this stripper fight.
