AT THE FAN: THE 31 MOST EMBARRASSING PIRATES MOMENTS POST-BONDS

Being that the MLB draft is right around the corner, expect plenty of bad memories to be dug up in the coming days by Pirate fans, as this is typically a time of year when they bloom at their fullest.

With that being the case, I've created a handy guide to 31 of these very moments in this week's article for 93.7 The Fan, The 31 Most Embarrassing Pirate Moments from the Post-Barry Bonds Era. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll vividly remember that there's nothing else in sports like being a Pirate fan.

For the discussion portion of this topic, I'll be chatting with Seibel and Starkey at 3:20 today. It's 93.7 on your dial and 937thefan.cbslocal.com on your browser.

I remember one night at 3RS the Bucs made multiple errors on one play and the fans threw the giveaways on the field in droves.

I believe they were Jolly Rogers in plastic tubes and the game was delayed for a while. That was pretty amazing.

I believe that may have been the 1995 home opener, right after the strike wiped out the end of the 94 season and the first few weeks of the 95 seaosn.

I want to say the 95 home opener was against the Dodgers and they gave way 'Opening Day' baseballs. I remember going to an opener against the Dodgers in the 90s and they gave away baseballs. The Bucs played pretty sloppy ball and fans threw them onto the field.

Found this through the wonders of Google -

Expos 6, Pirates 2
National League summaries.April 27, 1995PITTSBURGH — Both the Expos and the home fans turned on the Pirates in their opener. The game was delayed for 17 minutes when the crowd pelted the field with wooden pennant sticks while the Expos were batting in the fifth inning.

With the Expos leading 2-1 in the bizarre fifth, Roberto Kelly's infield single was thrown away first by third baseman Jeff King and then by right-fielder Orlando Merced, allowing three runs to score. Kelly ended up scoring himself as Merced's off-line throw bounced away from catcher Mark Parent.

The fans booed at first, then began tossing wooden sticks connected to free souvenir flags, quickly covering the area around the two dugouts and the outfield warning track.

It's a good day when the Expos are back in my life

Correct - my Home Opener ball is from 1994. Little did I know that it would only be the beginning...

Forgot about the Rule 5 draft...has to be embarrassing when other GMs are laughing at us

I remember the 1995 Opener vividly. I was 14 at the time, and that article has just about everything right, except that the sticks weren't wooden. They were plastic. The giveaway was a little Jolly Roger that rolled up into its own plastic flagpole. It was a pretty ingenious design. I still have mine, because my dad wouldn't let me throw it from Peanut Heaven.

Great list. So many to pick from sadly.

One I thought of was Lloyd McClendon drinking champagne after they AVOIDED losing 100 games after the '02 season.

#7 The Matt Morris Trade is when I officially renounced my loyalty for the Pirates and stopped supporting the organization altogether.

This list is staggering.

#1 - The fact that people still support the Pirates and defend the ownership

You could add letting Matt Capps walk to the list, as he leads all of baseball in saves.

Also the Jose Bautista for Robinzon Diaz trade looks pretty bad now that joey bats leads baseball in home runs.

Pirates Bring Shame To City Of Pittsburgh

Excellent list Mondesi. Well done. I literally laughed out loud at the Me First and the Gimme Gimme debacle. I was in town that weekend and couldn't believe that the Pirates botched their only core compentency - throwing Skyblasts. Anyone who thinks the organization is turning the corner, just read that list.... Based on Koz's comment, I think a great write in poll would be "At which point in the 18 year (counting this one already) losing streak did you officially quit supporting the organization. My moment was the signing of Bullington....after the Moskos selection, I became completely apathetic.

the bottom of the 9th right now against the giants is looking pretty similar to that opener.

You know, five years ago the Penguins were the disgustingly worst team in the NHL. How quickly all you turncoats will forget when the winning starts again.

Anyone who bought a ticket after the Aramis Ramirez for Bobby Hill deal is a sucker., embarrassingly that includes me.

"You know, five years ago the Penguins were the disgustingly worst team in the NHL. How quickly all you turncoats will forget when the winning starts again."

Even when the Pens were poor, they never tried to decieve the fans, and fought for what they thought was in their best interest in supporting a lockout.

Stupid comparison.

Please stop with the comparisons to the Pens. There is a salary cap in the NHL and the Pens' drafts were significantly more successful than the Pirates.

But what do I know, I am just another turncoat, right?

5 years ago the Penguins were bad for 5 yers.

5 years ago, the Pirates sucked, and 10 years ago, and 15 years ago, and now we're going on 18 years.

Honestly, get off the Pens/Pirates BS because there is comparison. Whether or not the Pens were drafting high or they were can't miss picks or whatever, they still made the picks and won with them.

I will say this again so maybe the Kool-Aid guzzlers might finally get it: THE PENGUINS WERE LOSING MONEY BECAUSE THEY HAD ACTUALLY SPENT MONEY TO WIN!

You can't compare the Penguins drafting and the Penguins drafting because in MLB there aren't players you can draft and make the roster in their first year. Yes it happens, but its so rare its not even realistic.
