As some of you know, I put together a list of the top 50 most painful losses in Pittsburgh towards the end of 2009. Pitt-Cincinnati was fresh in my mind, and it seemed like the moment was right. Unfortunately, time was my enemy, and the list was done too quickly and without enough commentary or video clips.
So with Pitt and Robert Morris both losing in pretty upsetting fashion recently, I figured this would be a good project to revisit and do right. You can check it out at the 93.7 The Fan website, and I'll be arguing about it on the Morning Show with Paul Alexander, Jon Burton, and Jim Colony at 8:40 AM.

Driving back from the game at Detroit two nights ago, me and my buddy were talking about Pittsburgh sports and I mentioned the loss to the Islanders as one of my personal most painful, almost up there with Belinda to Cabrera to Bonds to weak throw to home...
I hate David Volek. He took away what was going to be one of the best Wales Conference finals (Lemieux against Roy) and upon kicking the bleu, blanc et rouge's asses, the Stanley Cup final of Lemieux versus Gretzky would have been epic. F@$# the Islanders, I hope they spend eternity in the basement of our division.
I was only in middle school back then so I was more naive, but I remember most how I never really even considered the Pens could lose that game, even though it was a game 7--even when they trailed late it seemed they'd take the game into OT, then no doubt get a winner. Even then, you thought they'd just be right back next year. It was much more surreal than heartbreaking, unlike the Bucs' Cabrera loss when you knew that was it for them.
I think the Volek game could be number 2. The Steelers were pretty large underdogs in that Super Bowl, though the way the game unfolded was certainly painful. Fuck David Volek.
That 1992 NLCS game affected everyone. Even me, and I was only three years old at the time. It didn't matter if you watched it happen or if you've experienced the losing for 17 years.
My dad took that loss so hard. One time I was watching the game on ESPN Classic. He came in from work, looked at the TV and went directly upstairs. He still can't watch it. Just like I can't watch those two AFC Title games versus the Patriots.
Wow, Don, great piece! For me it is the Volek goal against the Pens, then Super Bowl 30, and those AFC Championship games v NE and SD.......but the Volek goal still makes me sick to my stomach, that was the best Pens team ever, and even a pessimist like me was already thinking of the Pens Dynasty with 3 straight Stanley Cups.....the Primeau goal is in the top 6 or so as well to me. Thanks for a great trip down "bad" Memory Lane!
