PITT #9 IN NEW POLL

As I've admitted over and over again, I was not prepared for the 2009-10 Pitt Panthers to be this good at this point in time. And today marks another milestone in the ascension of Jamie Dixon's team up the rankings, as the Panthers are now #9 in the AP top 25 and #11 in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

The 15-2 Panthers are riding an eight-game winning streak, having not lost since December 8 against Indiana. Pitt is 5-0 in the Big East and tied with #4 Villanova for the best record in the conference.

Despite their lofty ranking, the Panthers are still just the third-highest team in the poll when it comes to Big East members behind 'Nova and #5 Syracuse, who Pitt disposed of on January 2. Pitt will not face Villanova until February 21 at the Pete.

The Panthers' next opponent will be the Georgetown Hoyas, a 7 PM home game on Wednesday. The Hoyas are 13-3 and ranked 12th in the AP poll, with losses to Old Dominion, Marquette, and Villanova this season. Statistically, the Hoyas are led by G Austin Freeman (15.9 PPG) and C Greg Monroe (14.9 PPG/10 RPG).

Great job Pitt and great coaching by Jamie Dixon. I thought they were done the other day but pulled it out in OT. True sign of a good team
