IN A CLOSE RACE, PITT IS #2

The new polls were released on Monday and Pitt landed at #2 in the AP, just three points behind North Carolina in one of the closest votes in history. The Big East had three of the top five, four of the top 10, and six of the top 25. The ESPN/USA poll also had the Panthers at #2, although the margin in that voting was 27 points. From here on in, the only poll we'll be worried about is the poll that shows Pitt at #1 following a season-ending game in Detroit.

A few other Pitt notes:

--Dejuan Blair and Sam Young were both named first-team All-Big East. In a true exhibit of injustice, Levance Fields made only the third-team. [Pitt Blather]

--Stan, Guy and Chris Mack chatted with the one and only Dick Vitale on Monday. Here's the podcast. [ESPN 1250]

--Basketball Prospectus writer John Gasaway named Blair his national player of the year. [BP]

--Pitt finished an eye-popping 19-0 at the Pete this season. [PG]

--The Big East tournament starts on Tuesday, and here's a preview. Pitt opens Thursday at 7 PM against the 7, 10, or or 15 seed - either WVU, Notre Dame, or Rutgers. [Newsday]
