SYKORA SAVES THE DAY

PENS 1
ISLANDERS 0

It's a good thing Petr Sykora broke the scoreless tie at 17:32 of the third period, because the Pens and Islanders still might be on the ice at Mellon Arena. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win is a win, even if it's against the Islanders, who proved last week that yes, they are perfectly capable of beating the Pens. But considering the absence of both Sidney Crosby and Ryan Whitney and the mounting pressure to win each and every night, I'll take the W by any means possible, even if it means 57 scoreless minutes against the NHL's worst team.

As Empty Netters points out, it was Sykora's eighth game-winner this season, which is quickly moving up the Pens' all-time single-season list. And Marc-Andre Fleury, who's given up 13 goals in his last three contests, turned in the 13th shutout of his career and third of the season. So it wasn't all gloom and doom.

The 30-26-6 Pens pick up where they left off on Friday night against Chicago (34-17-8). The Penguins sit just two points behind Buffalo for the eighth playoff spot.

Whitney's absence will now be permanent.

Maybe he can run another Coach out of town who criticized for looking like Tarzan and playing like Jane.
