A NICE WIN

The Pens had a nice 2-1 shootout win over the San Jose Sharks at the Igloo last night, which was officially ended when MAF stopped Dan Boyle (above), sending 17,034 home happy and into some pretty dangerous Pittsburgh weather, which caused numerous power outages around the area.

The game-winner was provided in the shootout by Sidney Crosby, who was previously 0-for-4 this season and 9-for-32 lifetime in shootouts. It's one of the few aspects of his game that he doesn't completely dominate. But on this night, he was the only one of the six shooters to light the lamp, and that's all that matters.

After every big win, people come out of the woodwork to proclaim that "this will turn the Pens around" (you know, like I did after last week's comeback win over Tampa Bay), and that probably has a bit of truth and fiction to it. One game does not make a season, but the Pens have quietly won three of four, the lone hiccup being Sunday's disappointing shutout at the hands of Ty Conklin, Marian Hossa, and Detroit.

At the moment, the Pens sit just a point out of the playoffs, and they're getting Sergei Gonchar back to boot. And they just got a 36-save performance from Fleury, which is a nice bit of momentum for him. No, one game will not turn around the season. But even the most cynical of Penguin fans has to feel just a little better about the team going forward.

No mention of Fox Chapel's own Bill Thomas getting his first as a Pen?

Good game regardless. The 1-2-2 system they've been playing may not be the most exciting to watch, but honestly, whatever gets them 2 points is fine by me.
