Fred-Ex's Chase, A Media Warning, and more

Freddy Sanchez goes into the final two games of the season nursing a five-point lead over Florida's Miguel Cabrera. He will be facing Reds pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Matt Belisle this weekend. The Buccos haven't had a batting champ since Mad Dog Madlock hit .323 in 1983. Other Pirate winners: Madlock, 1981; Dave Parker, 1978 and 1977; Roberto Clemente, 1967, 1965, 1964, 1961; Dick Groat, 1960; Debs Garms, 1940; Paul Waner, 1936, 1934, 1927; Arky Vaughan, 1935, Ginger Beaumont in 1902, and Honus Wagner, an amazing eight times (1900, 03, 04, 06, 07, 08, 09, 11). And lest I sound like Keith Olbermann, Ed Swartwood of the 1883 Pittsburgh Alleghenys. By my count, that's 24 titles, second only to Boston's 31. It certainly helps having Ted Williams and Wade Boggs in your organization.
"Cultural Oddsmaker" AJ Daulerio offers his odds on which ESPN talking head is a little more Kordell than Namath. The omission of Mike Greenberg immediately discredits this piece.

"Who's Your Gay ESPN Sportscaster?" (Deadspin)
Pens goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, #1 overall pick in the 2003 draft, has one final shot to make the 2006 team. He risks losing his job to the two-headed monster of Jocelyn Thibault and Dany Sabourin. Yikes.
Apparently the US-Mexico Border has become a giant volleyball net:

Pensblog is good, but he always does something that sort of annoys me.

He does the whole "Penguin fan that's constantly upset that the Steelers get more attention"-thing.

I know Pens fans that are like this, to the point of almost flat-out disliking the Steelers over it.

But I don't think it's a Pittsburgh thing, or a Steelers thing. No need to hate on them because in just about every city pro football takes precedence over hockey. It's just the way it is.

It also doesn't help that the Steelers have been a competitive, and even a championship calibre, football team the past 5 years while the Penguins have been the worst team in hockey. Throw in the fact that the past few years haven't exactly been landmark years for the NHL, and it's no wonder any given city's hockey team isn't going to get the attention of the football team.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Penguins. Just as much as the Steelers and sometimes more. I own several jerseys and have plenty of memorobilia.

I just get annoyed by other Pens fans that get all pissy about the fact that the Steelers get all the attention. I've even heard some say they just outright hate the Steelers and the Steeler fans... to them I say fuck you and your stupid resentment. You're a Pittsburgh sports fan as well, and we should all root for all three versions of the Black 'n' Gold (and Blue and Gold if that's your thing, GO PITT!) together.

Lipps

The Pensblog loves the steelers as much as anyone. Were just trying to have fun, and the jokes on the steelers are all in fun.
Its not a battle, because in the end we are all Pittsburgh fans.I will support each team as equally as I can. Obviously it is hard to just the intent of a joke.
But the last thing we want to do, is make it seem like we are trying to pit the pens vs. the Steelers.

Sincerely,
Pensblog

Louis Lipps...

You've been around the game longer than I, so I respect your opinions.

Someone told me that you 'ripped' on the Pensblog in Mondesi's comments section, so I had to come check it out.

I am relieved that your post didnt rip us in the 'Pensblog sucks. it isn't funny' kind of way, but rather something that we do that annoys you.

We LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the Steelers. We love Steeler fans. We love everything about them.
We're just poking fun at the attention that the Steelers get in this town. "People know what Ben had for breakfast this morning" type of jokes.

We resent the bandwagoners who jumped on during the last few years.

Anytime we talk about the Steelers getting more attention, it's usually just a running joke with us.
I can definitely see how you took it the way you did. A lot of people have.

We are diehard Steeler fans. I can sit here and talk about the Steelers past with the best of em. Personally, I felt Super Bowl XL took the monkey off all our backs. Especially being 22, I finally get to see a Super Bowl championship. I can sit back and finally be at peace with the fact that the Steelers can't win every year.

I hope this clears stuff up, although there was nothing to clear up anyway. Your view on the Steeler content is dead-on accurate, just misinterpreted a little.

Thanks for reading the blog, by the way!!
