INTRODUCING THE PITTSBURGH VIPERS

If you're a fan of rugby and live in Pittsburgh, then the following news should make you very happy: the city now has a team in the American National Rugby League. Naturally, they will wear black and gold, although there may be a wait until they roll out the alternate powder blue jerseys. Ladies and gentlemen, give a warm welcome to the Pittsburgh Vipers.

The team is comprised of many players from the area, including Ken DeLucia (East Allegheny), the team captain/Director of Operations. The Vipers also have some international flair in Sione Tapu and David Banta, who both hail from the island nation of Tonga.

This Friday night (June 4) at Founders Field in Cheswick, the Vipers will be holding a Preseason Polynesian Luau starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission for the event will be $30 at the gate and the luau will include a traditional Polynesian prepared pig, soft drinks and beer. There will also be live music from the group “Polynesian Soul” from Monroeville.
The Vipers' first game comes on Saturday, June 5 at Founders Field against the Washington D.C. Slayers, with a 12 p.m. start. As you know, there's nothing like a good Pittsburgh-Washingtron grudge match to stir up some healthy competition right off the bat.
