STEELERS SIGN GALLOWAY, RETKOFSKY

With the season-ending status of WR Limas Sweed and Long Snapper Greg Warren, the Steelers had a few holes to fill, which they did today.

Joining the Steelers is fossilized yet speedy WR Joey Galloway, who was first-team All Big Ten in 1993, and LS Jared Retkofsky, the same guy who replaced Warren when he went down with an injury last season.

Both players were active in football for other organizations in 2009. After his release from Tampa Bay, Galloway was signed by New England but was released on October 20 when it was clearly not working there. He had seven catches for 67 yards in three games this season. As for Retkofsky, he played with the New York Sentinels in the inaugural season of the UFL in 2009.

The 38-year-old Galloway is from nearby Bellaire, Ohio, and is a part owner in the Arena League's Columbus Destroyers. He's apparently quite the entrepreneur, because he also owns a landscaping company in Dublin, Ohio, near Columbus. He played in Tampa for two seasons while Mike Tomlin was on the Bucs' coaching staff, and visited with the Steelers during this year's free agent signing period. He is a four-time Pro Bowl alternate (how many players can say that?) and has 689 catches for 10,777 yards in his 15-year career.

As for Sweed, Mike Tomlin would not elaborate on his condition out of respect for his privacy, but did say it was not football-related. Everyone knows that the guy's had a tough time since donning a Steeler uniform, so here's hoping he gets over whatever is ailing him.

STEELER UPDATE

A few updates on our favorite football team:

--Joey Galloway became roughly the 800th veteran free agent to sign with New England this offseason, which obviously means he won't be reuniting with Mike Tomlin. There are other fish in the sea. [ESPN]

--Lineman Trai Essex visited Tennessee as they attempt to find a roommate for Nate Washington. [WHNT.com]

--The Steelers re-signed LB Andre Frazier, who gives the team nice depth at the position. [PG]

--The Steelers may be getting a compensatory third-round pick in this year's draft. The more, the merrier. [FanHouse]

--11 Steelers parade banners were stolen from the Pittsburgh Public Works Garage. Between this, the melee at Allderdice, and the drug dealings at McDonald's, it was a pretty rough week for the city. [ESPN, The Pittsburgh Channel]

JOEY GALLOWAY TO THE STEELERS?

Getcha popcorn ready, because 37-year-old WR Joey Galloway is in town today to visit the Steelers, the PG's Gerry Dulac reports. Galloway has also visited with Buffalo and New England, who is apparently trying to sign every veteran free agent in the entire league. Galloway would be considered for the thid receiver spot recently vacated by Nate Washington, who struck it rich with the Tennessee Titans.

Due to a foot injury, Galloway had just 13 catches, 138 yards and no touchdowns in nine games last season. Prior to that, he was a 1,000-yard receiver for three consecutive seasons in Tampa. He and several other veteran Bucs were recently released in a salary cap purge. He's been in the league since 1995, when Seattle used a first-round pick to select him out of THE Ohio State University.

It's not outside the realm of possibility for the Steelers to explore a veteran via free agency at the position. They've done it several times in the past (Courtney Hawkins, Terance Mathis, etc.), but they've almost exclusively relied on homegrown talent at receiver for quite some time.

And don't forget that Mike Tomlin coached in Tampa for two years while Galloway was on the team. Will those factors make Pittsburgh a more attractive destination? I'd say it's a distinct possibility.
