Jon Baldwin Declares for NFL Draft, Rips Pitt

To the surprise of almost no one, Pitt WR Jon Baldwin is moving on to the NFL. To the surprise of some, Baldwin had some colorful comments to NFLDraftScout.com on the way out the door:
At first, it sounded as if Baldwin was non-committal on his future, but when asked, “Why would you stay [for your senior season] when you have no chemistry with QB Tino Sunseri, a new coach/system taking over next season and possibly hurt your draft stock for the 2012 draft, Baldwin clarified, “Oh, I misunderstood you … Heck yeah I’m leaving. It can only get worse. They had me running a lot of deep routes [this year] and yards were hard to come by. I barely ran intermediate routes; it felt like they were purposely trying to disrupt my draft stock.”
Baldwin can blame Wannstedt, Cignetti, or Sunseri all he wants, but he had more to do with his  own draft stock falling than anyone. Baldwin's a talented kid, but he was clearly dogging it at times, and like many Panthers, left a lot to be desired with his season as a whole. Regardless of his uneven effort, he's a big target with speed, so don't bet on him falling too far in the draft - parting shots to his school aside. He'll make a fine diva wide receiver at the next level.

How many time can you possibly run a route and be over thrown or under thrown horrendously before you start dogging it a little bit on your patterns?

I'm not saying I agree with it...but I understand.

Best of luck to the guy in the NFL and like I have said about many of our amazing talents, it's a shame we couldn't showcase them better while they were here to improve their draft stock even more.

LOL you mean playing for a big time team, in a big time conference, in front of all those fans, didn't help his draft stock? hahahahaaha Jon's first mistake was going to Pitt period.

Purposely trying to disrupt his draft stock is more likely a stretch. Now outrunning his Qb's arm is probably the best way to describe it. Good luck to Baldwin, though.

Remember when Crash Davis told Nuke LaLoosch he had a million dollar arm and a five cent head? Well, Tino Sunseri also has a five cent head and a five cent arm to match it. He's a 5'11.5" Div. I-a QB who can't run a 4.4 40, can't execute a pass play without locking in on a WR, can't get a play in on-time, can't even remotely read a blitz, and doesn't have the arm strength and accuracy to complete a 5 yard out.

With that being said, Baldwin certainly appeared to mail it in this season as well. However, there were many games when he wasn't targeted until the 4th quarter and Tino didn't even look at him. I know that because he never looks at anybody but who he's throwing to.

Unless he grows 3 inches and all of the sudden develops a cannon and a brain, Pitt's QB situation isn't going to improve with him in it.

Such a horrible choice to go to Pitt Wags....

He should've gone to PSU or WVU and joined the ranks of all of the great NFL receivers to come out of those places.

Like... ummm...... uhhh.... Chris Henry.... maybe... I dunno.

Remember when Pitt fans were pining for Tino as the great savior when Stull was the QB?

DON'T act like it didn't happen. I have proof, it's on the internets.

I'm not acting like anything, I am just stating my observations. If I knew that was going to be the QB situation, I would have declared as well.

Now his dad is saying he was misquoted...ruh-roh

I can understand his frustration with having Sunseri throwing to him, but how Baldwin reacted to it with his half assed play at times would affect his status more than Sunseri.

I get the feeling those comments will hurt his draft status as much as Sunseri did.

Baldwin is absolutely making the right choice and absolutely siting the right reasons... However, pointing them out publicly after a season in which he went half speed on more-than-his-share of plays isn't going to help his draft status too much either. I know those sorts of things won’t affect his status on the Raiders draft board, but he’s got way too much actual skill for the Raiders to be interested.

"I was misquoted... yeah i said exactly that, but..." What a bunch of bull.

Also, how awful is this bowl game going to be to watch? Whoever the new coach is, I wouldn’t play Baldwin after throwing his team under the bus. As if a bowl game vs Kentucky could be any less interesting.

Also… on a somewhat random side note. How is WVU ranked ahead of UConn in the BCS poll? Despite UConn winning the Big East and beating WVU head to head? Just another argument against the continued ignorance of the BCS. UConn wins all the tiebreakers for the automatic B. C. S. bid! The BCS rankings blatantly contradict themselves and no one cares. I understand that UConn was 8-4 overall while WVU was 9-3, but just maybe the higher ranking BCS team should get the BCS bid? If you're gonna give them the bid, you should rank them the highest out of their conference. Or, if you're not, then you need to change the tie breaker rules so you don't look like an a$$ clown.

OK, There are two words that could have saved Dave W., Jon Baldwin and the rest of PITT this year, Pat Bostick. Wanny's refusal to play Bostick over Tino was one of the 2 downfalls for PITT's offense this year. That and their piss poor O-Line. Bostick had the experience and the big wins to have the right to start this season. Tino had a Pittsburgh name and the mafia, non of which will help him on the field. Big fail by Wanny this year not to start Pat.

Finally someone said it. He had a terrible year and seemed to dog it and quit many times this year. This is an NFL Bust waiting to happen. If you quit in the NFL you are out the door quickly....... Good bye and Good Luck Jon.....I hope the Steelers stay far far away from you....

The Abiding Dude said...

Bostick doesn't want to play....

@The Abiding Dude

Craziest opinion I have ever heard...

BURGH08 said...

....but Pitt being threatened to play Sunseri because of mafia ties isn't a crazy opinion?

I can see it now. Wanny wakes up with the bloody head of a panther in his bed, forcing Sunseri behind center.

Bostick quarterbacking wins over WVU an Notre Dame is only a coincidence, handing the ball to Shady McCoy. He had horrible numbers in both games.

Please.

And I have seriously heard that Bostick does not want to play...I dunno if it is legit or not, but it is reasonable if he is not the same as he was when he was recruited?
