Everything's coming up roses for the Penguins these days: a 10 game winning streak, the most points in the NHL, Sidney Crosby playing out of his mind, Marc-Andre Fleury slamming the door on any goalie controversy, a ranking of 3rd in the league in goals-against, Kris Letang leading All-Star voting for defensemen despite being absent from the ballot, and all of this happening without Jordan Staal.
Well, you can add another positive to that lengthy list, because their new home was named the “Best NHL Arena” in the sixth annual Sports Business Journal readers’ survey on the state of the sports industry. Take that, Madison Square Garden.
“We are honored that the Sports Business Journal and its readers think so highly of CONSOL Energy Center,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Penguins. “It’s been an exciting first few months – not only because of the great hockey, but also because of all the other events we’ve been able to host – and now we look forward to maintaining that standard and doing even better to make this the premier sports and entertainment destination in the Pittsburgh region.”
In addition, the Penguins finished "only" 2nd in the NHL in Most Innovative Business Practices (which I have a hard time believing) and 3rd in the NHL in Most Effective Team Owner (behind only Detroit and Chicago). Oh well. I guess that will give them something to aspire to next year.
