Pirates Sign 16-Year-Old SS Dilson Herrera, Beat Cardinals Again

Continuing a recent and welcome trend, the Buccos signed another talented international amateur today: SS Dilson Herrera, a 16-year-old from Colombia. Sorry, that's the best I could do for a picture. It looks like it was clipped out of his high school yearbook and glued crookedly onto my screen.

The signing, announced today by Neal Huntington and Rene Gayo, includes a $220,000 bonus, the third-largest the Pirates have paid out this year for an international player. Luckily, Huntington stopped short of thanking his bosses for the money to sign the player this time around, unlike the  recent consummations of the Stetson Allie and Jameson Taillon deals.

Herrera hit .292 (21-for-72) with five doubles and five RBI in a Colombian league this year, stealing 6-of-7 bases. Since those stats aren't much to go on, I'll take Gayo at his word that the organization has scouted Herrera since he was just 13 years old and leave it at that. That should be good news for all you Little Leaguers reading this site right now. Play your cards right and you too could be a Pittsburgh Pirate in a few years.

In other, less sarcastic news, Ross Ohlendorf is headed to the DL, the latest in a nightmare of a season that has featured everything from a line drive to the noggin to insanely bad run support totally undermining the "Mr. Wonderful" nickname. Pitcher Brian Burres will take Ohlendorf's spot on the roster.

As for actual game action, which I haven't talked about in quite a few days, the Pirates beat the Cardinals by a 5-2 count on Wednesday, taking two of three from Tony LaRussa's club. I don't care how bad of a season it's been, but if you can ruin two of Tony LaRussa's days, it's a success on some level.

Daniel McCutchen threw six innings of three-hit, shutout ball on Wednesday, leaving everyone at PNC Park to pick their jaws off the ground. Run support was provided by Neil Walker's bases-loaded triple in the third, and a Garrett Jones dinger in the 8th. Albert Pujols was 0-for-4, and remains stuck on 399 home runs lifetime against the Pirates for his career.

The Bucs have a day off on Thursday, then travel to Milwaukee for a few cheese curds, some beer, and three games with the Brewers starting on Friday night. Hopefully a Pirate pitcher with some guts can put one in Prince Fielder's ear so we can have some added excitement.

I can't believe I went to one Pirate game this year and it is the one game that Mr. Wonderful won.

Pirates need more ice cream bowl nights. They never lose on ice cream bowl day or night, when Mr. Wonderful pitches.

It "might" be time to spend a little more on some MLB players instead of recruiting off various Pony League's around the world.
Get this sham of an ownership "out" as soon as possible. Fourteen years (with the name Nutting attached) is fourteen years too many....And the losses just keep piling up.
