The Pirates' roster is becoming more colorful by the minute. First, they add a guy who once ate his hat. Then, they trade for a catcher who fractured his testicle. Today, welcome karate-kicking Chan Ho Park to the squad.
Since Neal Huntington is desperate to add arms to the struggggling Bucco bullpen, he's once again gone down the treacherous road of the waiver claim, grabbing Park (late of the Yankees) and Chris Resop, who came from the Atlanta organization with this soon to be famous line from Huntington: "We are intrigued by Resop's stuff and results this year".
Resop's ERA in one 2010 appearance with Atlanta was 22.50, he sprained his oblique and was placed on the DL, rehabbed in the minors, and was waived on August 1. He has has a 6.14 ERA in 58 career appearances over five major-league seasons. Half of his Wikipedia page is devoted to a 2008 game in which he pitched, played left field, and came back to give up the game-losing hit in an extra-inning loss to the Pirates. I don't know about you, but I'm certainly intrigued.
Park has kicked around in the big leagues since 1994, collecting approximately $85 million in salary. He has a career line of 122-96, 4.37, but sported an ERA of 5.60 in 29 appearances for the Evil Empire this year. His claim to fame is a 1999 drop kick to the Angels' Tim Belcher, which you can read all about right here. His role in Pittsburgh, according to Huntington, is to "help stabilize the middle innings."
To make room for the duo, P Steven Jackson was designated for assignment, and 1B Steve Pearce was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day. Another roster move is expected to be coming.
The Pirates open a series with Colorado tonight at PNC. Newly-acquired RHP James McDonald (0-1, 8.22) takes on LHP Jeff Francis (4-3, 4.44) at 7:05.

Seriously though, people have spoke pretty highly of Resop & McDonald. Here's to hoping they are the real deals!!! ...& here's to knowing that we gave up barely more than jack & shit to get them :-/
Well, we didn't give up ANYTHING to get them aside from cash. They were waiver claims.
Resop is mildly intriguing because he's dominated AAA as a starter this year. As far as free pitchers go, I guess that's pretty cool.
Park...eh. Probably one of the worst pitchers in the Majors. Might be serviceable, I guess.
