The Hot Button

I've been holed up in my nerdery thinking up some new questions for this week's edition of The Hot Button, and here's what I've come up with: questions regarding the legacy of George Steinbrenner, the LeBron James-Dan Gilbert mess, the futures of LaMarr Woodley and Mike Tomlin, and the MLB Home Run Derby.

I've also posted the results of last week's polls, including which Pittsburgh athlete most of you would want to meet, the Penguins' team-building philosophy, and a few other topics spread across the sports world. I know many of you have been on pins and needles waiting for the results, but please try to contain your enthusiasm.

Now do as the Hiltons do and vote...or die.

I was listening to the Bill Simmons podcast and Dave Dameshek (ex-Pittsburgher and Pirate fan) was on it.

Dameshek actually spoke of Steinbrenner favorably and said he was good for baseball etc etc.

Another guy on the podcast jokingly described Dave as having "Pittsburgh Pirates Stockholm Syndrome". In other words, he'd been an oppressed fan for so long, that he started to admire his oppressors.

Kind of funny explanation, and I thought of it when I saw that about 45% of the people who took the poll (most of which I assume are Pirates fans) thought that King George was good for baseball.

He wasn't.

He was good for the Yankees, and by extension, other large market teams (although I doubt this second part was done on purpose). But that's it.

The NFL does just fine without an "evil empire" for everyone to root again. The closest that league has is the Cowboys (don't always win, but they sure have the "evil" part down).

Blame the Nuttings for our failures all you want, and I agree. But Steinbrenner's the man who created the environment for these things to take place in in the first place.

And if you don't want to feel bad for the Pirates, feel bad for the small market teams that actually try and can't compete as often as King George's Yanks: The Twins, A's, etc.

Add in a lifetime of general shadiness, and farewell George, but I'm not gonna miss ya buddy. The only people that will are Yankee fans, and you basically had to buy them over just like you bought your teams.

I am just waiting for the latest TMZ report where Ben shows up to a youth football camp and steals 30 bagged lunches.

I heard Roethlisberger was reported to have been in the same country as Steinbrenner at the time of his heart attack, coincidence? I think not...

Nice Billy Madison reference Burress!

I heard that at college orientations they now ask you to "look at the person to your left & the person to your right... one of the three of you will be assaulted by roethlisberger before graduation"
