TODAY'S HEADLINES

Today's headlines include a dramatic Bucco extra-inning loss, an ace for 66, a look at who the Pirates will take at #2, Big Ben's Big Interview rumors, Pitt games moving to The Fan, Brad Lincoln's debut, John Steigerwald rooting for the Flyers, and much more...

Freddy Sanchez hit a game-winning sac fly scoring Andres Torres in the 10th inning, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 win over the Pirates on Sunday at PNC Park.

The Bucs got some late-game heroics from PH Delwyn Young, who hit a two-out, two-run, game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth; but Octavio Dotel could not make that lead hold up in the one extra frame, allowing Torres' leadoff double shortly after taking over for Evan Meek.

The Pirates put two men on in the 10th, but Lastings Milledge and Jeff Clement failed to knock them in, much to the surprise of absolutely no one. Thankfully, Ronny Cedeno's eye-black mustache gave some nice comic relief in spite of the disappointing loss.

The 23-33 Bucs will be back at it on Monday in a makeup game against the Chicago Cubs, with Carlos Silva (7-0, 3.12) taking on the Pirate-controlled Dana Eveland (3-4, 6.45). Gametime is set for 12:35 p.m. at PNC. [ESPN]

Is Monday the day Manny Machado (a.k.a. "A-Rod Light") becomes a Pirate?

The 2010 MLB Draft takes place Monday night at 7 p.m. on the MLB Network, and Bryce Harper is expected to go #1 overall to the Washington Nationals, forming a 1-2 ticket-selling combo with Stephen Strasburg for the foreseeable future. Let's hope the Pirates get it right at #2. [MLB.com]

93.7 The Fan has struck a deal to broadcast Pitt Panther basketball and football games, and an official announcement should be made by the end of next week.  Bill Hillgrove will be retained as the play-by-play announcer, and it is believed that John Seibel will have a close affiliation in the football broadcasts.

Pitt's rights had previously been held by Clear Channel, which currently holds the rights to Steelers (WDVE), Penguins (WXDX) and Pirates (WPGB). [Bob Smizik Blog]

Mario Lemieux added another memorable moment to his athletic career on Saturday at Oakmont County Club, when he aced the 182-yard No. 6 hole, using an 8-iron.

Nonetheless, I'm sure he'd rather be watching his team in the Stanley Cup Finals this weekend. [PG]

ILB Quinton Alston from Timber Creek High School in Slickville, New Jersey committed to Pitt over the weekend.

Alston chose Pitt over more than 20 other scholarship offers including from Wisconsin, Virginia, West Virginia, Baylor, Iowa, Purdue, North Carolina State and Boston College. [Redshirt Diaries]

Brad Lincoln will probably make his major league debut Wednesday against the Nationals in Washington, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Trib. It would've been nice to have him face off against Strasburg, but hey, better late than never.

Lincoln is 6-2 with a 3.16 in 11 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this season. [Trib]

Ben Roethlisberger's public relations specialists want to use a national sit-down interview (Oprah, Larry King, etc.) as a way for him to bare his soul in the wake of his alleged sexual assault scandal, according to an NFL Network report. Whatever he's doing, he'd better do it sooner rather than later. [ESPN]

Is Dion Lewis already at the 'irreplaceable' stage of his career? ESPN examines Lewis' importance to Pitt as well as his backups at the position. [ESPN Big East Blog]

John Steigerwald is rooting for the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals, and you can find his explanation here.

At least it's not for reasons like "alleviating the tax burdens on the people in Allegheny County". [Just Watch the Game; 93.7 The Fan]

The American Outlaws, a supporters group of the US Mens National Soccer Team, has a Pittsburgh chapter, and their website has all the info on your Pittsburgh World Cup viewing needs. [American Outlaws]

The Third Annual Hines Ward Pittsburgh Celebrity Softball game will take place on June 9 at 6PM at the Duquesne Baseball Field in Green Tree.

An all-star lineup is scheduled to appear:, including Ben Roethlisberger, Randle El, Foote, McFadden, Gay, Hampton, Farrior, Colon, Woodley, Heath Miller, Batch, Dixon, Mike Wallace, Max Starks, Keisel, Joe Burnett and Hines Ward. [ESPN 1250]

That extra inning loss should fall squarely on Ryan Doumit's shoulders. Not only did he just flat out wiff trying to catch that "passed ball" or "wild pitch" that was wrongly charged to dotel in the tenth (a play which allowed torres to reach 3rd). With torres on 3rd, Sanchez's fly to center bring him in... if our catcher could... i dunno, catch! then the giants probably don't score in the top of the tenth.

Not to mention doumit's atrocious caught stealing stats. They mentioned during the game that he's thrown out 2 runners in 39 attempts! After seeing Aubrey Huff (career high 8SBs & 34yrs old) steal bases #2 AND #3 this season, it's no surprise why! They're talking about moving him to first to "keep his bat in the lineup"... ya ok... call it what you want, but get him out from behind the dish!

"Let's hope the Pirates get it right at #2". Please tell me you're not that delusional. When's the last time the Succos got ANYTHING right? They will pick the guy that costs them the least money, end of story.
While we're here, great move trading Freddy Sanchez by the way, currently batting .371...Jesus tap dancing christ.

Sanchez has only played 17 games this year. Let's not give him the NL MVP award yet.

How about "Jesus Christ on a rubber crutch at a polio party?"

The Pirates signed Pedro Alvarez for over $6 million, one of the highest sums in the draft.

Yep.

They never fork over the money.

North Korea released 2 American journalists last year early from their 12 year labor camp sentence.

Yep.

They never do good deeds.

See, I can make stupid analogies too. You'd be a good PR man for a crooked organization like the Succos, Nate. Answer me this, why didn't they draft Matt Weiters when they had the chance? Man I really wish the Pirates had the number #1 overall pick these past two years, how would fans defend them not picking Strasburg/Harper?
And I'm still waiting for a Succos fan to explain to me how they got an $80 million check from MLB last December, and their payroll was only $30 million, and they claimed they only made $2.5 million (while their books are closed)... Anyone? Oh sorry, you're too busy contributing to that fund by attending SkyBlast and other garbage promotions that only 8 year olds and mentally retarded people should be impressed by.

If you're not going to acknowledge the simple fact that literally nobody who worked in the front office when the team didn't draft Wieters (who, honestly, has royally sucked so far) is working for the team anymore, I'm not sure what kind of a productive conversation we can have.

Nobody is arguing that the McClatchy/Littlefield front office ever had a good idea (at least on purpose.) However, you can't just ignore the fact that the Pirates have been the biggest spenders in the draft since Coonelly and Huntington took over. You can't say they're not spending money in an area that they are, quite clearly, spending money.
