ROETHLISBERGER SPEAKS...SORT OF

The Ben Roethlisberger Image Rehab Tour had another milestone on Thursday, as the QB spoke to the media for the first time in a long time with no script or written statement in front of him [video].

While that's great, the only problem was that the Q&A was about as brief as one could be, lasting all of two questions before he was pulled away by a Steeler publicist. Said Roethlisberger:
"It's been hard being away, but I put a lot of time and effort, on and off the field, while I’ve been gone,” he said. "I love football to death, but I think it's meant more to be out here with my teammates, brothers and family, if you will. That's what's been neat about getting back out here. A lot of thought has been put into my life and the decisions I have made in my past."

Roethlisberger took a few questions and told reporters that “I think this is a time for me to close the chapter of the last couple years of my life.”
Like I said, there wasn't nearly enough here to sink your teeth into, but it's a step in the right direction. No one likes a canned, prepared statement written by someone else, and that was clearly not the case here. He's got a tremendously long way to go, but slowly you can see the baby steps being attempted by Roethlisberger to address things and segue into football again.

after reading his answers to the second question, i feel like he still lacks the self awareness that is needed for personal change...

I feel like the only person who knows if he has the self-awareness to make changes would be the "self" in question: Ben. The rest of us don't KNOW shit. We will find out one way or another over the coming months/years. That is all any of us really knows.

I guess since we're obviously keeping him the best case scenario is that he turns his life around for the better.

I mean, for as much as we make fun of him, I'm pretty sure Ray Lewis did a complete 180 after his problems with the law back in the day too.

If we're stuck with the guy, I guess that's the absolute best we can hope for from Large Benjamin.

Corey's dime store diagnosis is exactly why I didn't care if he spoke to the public or not.

Obviously at the end of the day it's in his best interest to do so, but there is always going to be whiners that "feel like" they didn't speak to their particular comfort zone.

Those types will never be satisfied in my opinion. There wasn't anything he could say that would change my opinion either, but his actions down the road will.

@Lou,

I hate to say I agree about Ray Lewis, but that is true. He knew second chances don't come around often and appears to have turned his life around. I think he is actually pursuing an MBA in the offseason?

All we can do with Ben is wait. I refused to give him the benefit of the doubt when the allegations initially broke because I still feel he was stupid to take a risk like that so close to the Vegas issue. However, once Herr Goodell deciced to suspend him for nearly half the season with no arrest or charges, I decided to channel my hate towards him.
