Sidney Crosby will not be playing for Canada in the world hockey championships in Germany, turning down an invitation offered after the Penguins were eliminated. I think everyone's in agreement that he's done enough for that country in 2010. [ESPN]
However, Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar will both be joining Team Russia, maybe to flush the memories of the Canadiens series away. Or maybe to fully burn themselves out on hockey. It's up in the air. [TSN]
Tom Gorzelanny (1-4, 2.83) takes the hill for the Chicago Cubs this afternoon against Brian Burres (2-1, 3.91) and the Pirates at 2:20. Despite their overall struggles, the Pirates are actually 3-0 against the Cubs this year, so their embarrassing week thus far has at least a chance to improve just a little. [PittsburghPirates.com]
The Mellon Arena debate was pushed to the forefront with the Penguins' recent elimination, and people remain as divided as ever on its future, as a meeting last night at Ebenezer Baptist Church would illustrate. [Trib]
Trai Essex, Justin Hartwig, and Sean McHugh recently visited patients at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, which is the kind of Steeler off-field story that I much prefer mentioning given the other options. [Steelers.com]
Timothy Olyphant, the actor known for his roles in Deadwood and Justified, has replaced Sharlto Copley in the film I Am Number Four, which starts shooting in the Pittsburgh area next week. It will become the 8,000th movie shot in Pittsburgh in the last two years, give or take a couple thousand. [PG]

Roethlisberger should be out there doing hospital visits. Pandering and opportunistic? Maybe, but at least it would show some genuine effort.
Can't blame Sid for not playing for Canada. All the Pens that have been here for the last 3 yrs have to be borderline burnt out on hockey. Oh yeah, and there's those gracious french canadiens as well!
Sergei was playing like betty white out there (in game 7 especially!). Let him go get worn down so he'll play more poorly for his new team next year. It's been a great ride, but he doesn't seem to have it anymore.
LET'S GO BUCS!!
I certainly can't blame Sid either. He wins his home country and Gold Medal and they still treat him like dirt, forget it.
It's one thing to boo him, it's another to chant Crosby Sucks.
Enjoy the summer off kid, you deserve it!
I doubt Sid's decision was based on the fact that Montreal fans booed him.
I bet he'd be disappointed if they didn't boo him. The Olympics are over, those fans in Montreal want their team to win.
He's taking time off because he's played in more hockey games than any other human being on the planet in the last 24 months.
The Hill District residents' remarks as to what should be done with the Arena is almost laughable.
What are they going to do up there? Build more Section 8 housing? We had to appease the residents when the CEC was being bid on by getting a grocery store to come in and companies were backing out left and right because nobody is going to insure a business there.
The residents can say what they want or blame who they want and make all of the excuses as to why the Hill is a dump, but the decision should be that of the taxpayers and I am going to go out on a limb and guess most of those people squawking receive more from the Gov't than they give......... .
@ Burress...
One of your most prescient posts to date. So true, so true. In the article, the one police detective made the comment that developers need to "make room for housing and other amenities". By "amenities" does she mean businesses or more taxpayer funded boondoggles that will end up in urban blight? Much to these residents' chagrin, businesses just don't appear out of thin air. They require capital, individuals willing to take risks, and viable customers to support them. I haven't lived in Pittsburgh for 8 years, but I would love to meet a developer and banker that would consider making an investment in that area (without considerable subsidies). It is amazing to me that some of the voices now clamoring for business development have spent most of their lives suckling from the government teat and have no understanding of how real commerce works. If the residents want the Hill District to return to the glory days of the 1950's, they can either find large donors to invest in the area or they can become self reliant and take the risks themselves.
