Big Lead Sports Bar

TODAY'S HEADLINES

FYI: I was doing some site spring cleaning yesterday and finally installed a "read more" button, which will now be used on most posts. So here's a good opportunity to take it for a test drive.

Jamie Dixon signed an extension through 2017-18 with Pitt yesterday, which sounds exciting but actually means very little in the world of college sports. It wasn't like that contract he had that ran through 2016 was scaring off any potential suitors.

Dixon actually said he agreed to the extension during the season after he was approached by the university, even though he didn't sign the deal until Wednesday. So I guess Phil Knight will have to find someone else to take his Oregon money. [PG]

The Pittsburgh Penguins dropped a 2-0 decision to Tampa last night at Mellon Arena, and it's getting rather late in the game to still have performances like this. I sure hope that magic playoff switch is ready to get turned on.

Slumping Lightning goalie Mike Smith shut out the Pens on 27 shots, the Pittsburgh power play went 0-for-4 (including a 5-minute whiff in the first period), and the effort...well...
"With all due respect to them, there's a handful of guys I haven't even heard of," Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "They've got nothing to play for and they come in and outwork us in our building. It's a little concerning."
Ouch.

Saturday brings Atlanta into Mellon Arena, and with the Thrashers just two points off of a playoff spot, I can imagine that at least one team will show up. [ESPN]

"The Sports Grouch", John Steigerwald, checks in with some free advice for those who want the public to assume their innocence:
Stop doing stupid things and getting in trouble with the cops.

Try dinner and a movie instead of hanging out in college bars and telling the “bitches to take your shots”.

Try to avoid having a really big, mean looking guy guard the bathroom door when you’re in there with a woman. It doesn’t look good.
Santonio Holmes, in totally unrelated news, announced yesterday on Twitter that "it's time to wake and bake".

Hopefully I don't have to explain that one to you. Amazing how this account is still active. [Twitter]

Mark Madden suggests the only way for the Steelers' problems to go away is if they simultaneously cut Ben Roethlisberger, Santonio Holmes, James Harrison, and Jeff Reed. In other words, the Steelers' problems aren't going away. [Mark Madden/WXDX]

The Pittsburgh Pirates "It's Time" Contest ends tonight at 11:59 PM EST. May I suggest "It's Time...to wake and bake"? [MH]

PNC Park is adding a variety of new food items to keep your eyes off the field this year, including a sauerkraut-and-Thousand-Island-dressing-topped Reuben Dog, seared Ahi Tuna served atop a wasabi risotto cake, and Wild Pacific Salmon roasted on a cedar plank.

Get it...Pirates...plank!! [PG]

The DVE Morning Show is having a March Mistress poll, including everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Steve Phillips-mistress Brooke Hundley. As you can see, voting is underway:

The Pens effort ( or lack thereof) last night was actually understated in Orpik's comments. But I honestly love that guy, he plays his butt off every shift, crushes people, and tells it like it is afterwards.

How about the cheap shot on Fedotenko? I didn't hear what LeCavalier had to say about it after so vehemently bashing Matt Cooke.......... Interesting.

This isn't exactly breaking news, but Santonio Holmes is a poster child for abortion. Too bad he already has 3 kids................

i vote no for the read more button...it moves you to the article instead of just expanding it...complicates the navigation.

I'm with the others. Not a big fan of the "Read More" but if it makes your life easier Don, than I can learn to live with it.

Sorry but I don't like the More button either, it's too hard to use after my morning wake and bake.

You don't need to install anything, you can just put a "read more" thing in your post by going to "edit html" and putting

!-- more --

between < > (can't put it together in the comment).

If you do it in "compose" mode it's only available in the updated version of blogger, but the new version is a pain in the ass. I've noticed, though, that if do a jump break you can't have an embedded video above it, it won't show up until they click through to the post.

I think you ought to keep "read more" for the lengthy photo posts, reader mail, or the things that might not appeal to everyone. But, for big news stories, breaking news or headlines, keep the full post on the main page. "Read more" drives up the number of page views, but also takes more time to read.

Please get rid of the "Read More" button.

Thanks.

As wrong as Ben’s alleged statement is on MANY levels, I can’t front and say its not funny, in a Chapelian, Rick James sort of way.

I’m literally amazed that #10 could dumb enough to tweet a statement like that… I’m all for him exercising right to speech via social media like the rest of America tho…

Santonio's wake and baking?

He's just like me in high school...

...except I didn't throw beverages at people's faces.
