WEDNESDAY AT THE POLLS

It's such a slow news day that the Steelers signing a backup punter from Pitt has been the big story for the past 24 hours. So let's break up the monotony with a couple poll questions to shake things up this afternoon...

I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't the following choice in the Olympic poll:

"I couldn't really care less because I'd prefer they not ruin the NHL season to take a break for a stupid and pointless international tournament."

But alas. . . I choose "other"

I don't want any of the Penguins in the Olympics to get hurt.

The Pens on those teams have already played the maximum amount of games over the last 2 seasons.

Peyton Manning? Come on now, why not just throw Farve in there too...;-)

Not that anyone cares but I should have spelled that, Favre

Big Ben's 2 Super Bowls: 30/51, 379 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs

Manning's: 56/83, 580 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

I'd give Manning a slight edge in performance, although that last INT was bad. The Saint's D is a lot better than the Cardinals was though.

Also, you may not care about the Olympics, which is anyone's right, but the players do, which is why they play in them. Case in point: Ovechkin and Malkin are both ready to accept any punishment from the NHL to play in the Winter games in Russia in 2014 (if the NHL players are not participating in those games - currently there's no agreement in place).

I know they do Mad.

I'm just more concerned with how my NHL team does than how team USA does, which I think is common among American fans. I do, however, understand how much the Olympic tournament means to players and fans in just about every other hockey playing country. So I'll live with it and pray for no major injuries.

Ben's stats aren't quite as good as Manning's in the big game, but when Ben was down and we absolutely needed points late in the game, I don't recall him throwing a pick six. He did the opposite.

Sometimes, and I know it sounds like a terrible cliche, quarterbacking is about much more than stats.

BTW, caught a replay of SBXL on ESPN. Now that we're 4 years removed from the game, I must say that we were VERY fortunate to win that game. Not because of the referees (they played the "controversial" OPI and holding penalties with Seahawk radio commentary and their color guy at the time said that the refs are would call those almost every time, which I thought was funny), but just because both teams were outright awful.

The Steelers defense was maybe average, the Seahawks offense shot itself in the foot repeatedly (if it hadn't, they would've won), and the Steelers offense was an abomination outside of 3 or 4 nice plays that basically won the game.

Definitely not a 5-star (or even a 3, 2, or 1 star) classic.

Also, Ben's passer rating was horrible (and really, he was a 2nd year greenhorn in the friggin Super Bowl), but he actually made a few nice plays with his feet and threw a block that helped make the Randle El pass that clinched the game, which have kind of been forgotten.

Like I said, quarterbacking isn't always about stats.

Kinda surprised so many people think Pitt will join the Big 10 when I'm not certain the Big 10 will be adding ANYONE.

I'm not a homer when it comes to Ben (well, not totally), but I never really understand why people throw his XL performance without remembering the play he had in the playoffs to get to the Super Bowl.

He also seems to get the tag of playing for a good team, a great defense, and his first Lombardi with a team that ran the ball primarily.

Yet, they fail to note that was often the core of Steeler teams in the Cowher era, yet never could get over the top until they drafted him.

I don't think ripping Manning needs to happen as much as folks recognizing number 7 on his own merits.

Thoughts....

1. I want crosby and malkin to go 1 and 2 in Olympic scoring, but as they say in
D2 The Mighty Ducks, USA all the way.

2. The Super Bowl should be play on a Sunday.........in January.

3. Nothing would make me happier than for Lemieux and Burkle to buy the Pirates.

4. Terrible idea. As a Penn State student, I can't really say I'm a fan of the shit of the put on the basketball court, I think they would even have a shot at getting in a 96 team field.

5. I would like to see Pitt in the big ten, but that is just so penn state is forced to play them every year after thanksgiving. I feel like penn state administration has cheated fans on both sides out of a great football rivalry.

6. I don't now how this isn't unanimous for Ben. He is the most clutch player in the league today.
