SORT OF A BIG NIGHT

A short offseason filled with many memorable moments has given way to tonight's Penguin opener against the Rangers, which comes complete with a TribTron appearance and a banner-raising. And post-game fireworks. Just another home game, right? Right?

Meanwhile, their opening-night opponents have kept busy with Madonna-carrying appearances on the David Letterman Show this week. Is this considered a bigger distraction than hosting WWE Raw? I guess that's open for debate.

Also on the TV dial tonight is Pitt-Louisville on ESPN2, which Bob Smizik will be watching. It features hot-seated Cardinals coach Steve Kraigthorpe facing what's being called a must-win game for him and his program. Hopefully the Pitt defense makes the trip this week.

This is the Big East opener for the Panthers, and considering they were the preseason favorite to win the conference, they need to focus on the task at hand - quickly. As for the D, all they have to do is tackle, not take penalties, and stop extending opponents' drives. Sounds reasonable.
