PITT ENTERS THE TOP 20

Pitt is off to their best start since going 7-1 back in the days of Dan Marino, and the nation is starting to take notice, as witnessed by the Panthers gracing the front page of ESPN.com yesterday and a full page article in this week's SI on freshman phenom Dion Lewis.

On the heels of yesterday's surprisingly easy homecoming domination of South Florida, Dave Wannstedt's team has entered the AP Top 20 for the first time since Week 15 of last season. Their current ranking of 16 is the high-water mark under Wanny and the highest as a team since being ranked 9th in 2003.

Of local interest, the WVU Mountaineers and PSU Nittany Lions also join the Panthers in the Top 20. Penn State is 7-1 and ranked 12th in the AP after their 35-10 victory at The Big House yesterday. West Virginia has quietly run their record to 6-1 following an emotional 28-24 win over UConn on Saturday.

The USA Today poll has Penn State 10th, Pitt 17th, and West Virginia 20th. The BCS rankings will be released later today. Last week's computerized rankings placed Penn State 13th, Pitt 20th, and West Virginia 23rd.

Pitt resumes play on November 7 with a home contest against Greg Paulus and 3-4 Syracuse; WVU travels to South Florida for a TV game this Friday on ESPN2, while the Nittany Lions travel to Northwestern for a 4:30 game on Halloween.

7-1, Top 20, and yet I'm sure I'm not alone in saying the Syracuse game in two weeks scares me--it's exactly the type of game we seem to screw up.

Lewis for Heisman!
Stull runner up.

Amazing thoughts there Mark. You should publish your own blog. I'm with you JW, Syracuse scares me too. I can see it being a big let-down.

In years past I'd agree, but I think Pitt's line play is good enough that they will just go out and take care of business- not to mention all the weapons they have on offense. This is going to be a hell of a stretch run
