NEWS AND NOTES

--Pirate pitcher Charlie Morton's a musician? Who knew we had a budding Bronson Arroyo on our hands? [Myspace]

--Rashard Mendenhall, sick and sent home from practice on Thursday, returned today and expects to play on Sunday. But only if he promises to cough on some Browns during the game. [Trib]

--Dave Dameshek's been knocking it out of the park with these weekend football previews for Page 2, and here's this week's edition. [ESPN.com]

--Breaking news: there's a tailgating ban in effect for this weekend's Penn State game. Re-adjust your partying accordingly. [CentreDaily.com]

--Don't forget, this week's Pitt game will be played tonight on ESPN at 8 PM. The Wannstache looks for his first win over the Scarlet Knights, and the Panthers are 3.5 point favorites on the road. Time to seize the opportunity, boys. [PG]

--Joe Starkey rightly cites Bud Selig's BS in his repeated statements that MLB has parity. If I hear Bud cite those 2005-2008 numbers during one more interview, I think I'm going to throw something. [Trib]

--If you're looking for the answer as to why there's a picture of a Donald Duck tattoo and a link to a Pittsburgh foodie blog, the answer lies in the accompanying story: a thank-you to the awesome hospitals in the Pittsburgh area. [Snickie]

--In the "yesterday's news" category (since I failed to link it yesterday), former Nittany Lion RB Austin Scott is suing Penn State. [The Morning Call]

--Three Pirate prospects will be facing uberpitcher Stephen Strasburg tonight in an Arizona Fall League game. See, the Pirates do play in October! [Raise the Jolly Roger]
