It's not often that you can surrender 500 yards on defense and still win a game by 27, but that's exactly what the Pitt Panthers did in a 54-27 win over Buffalo.
The Panther D was torched by Buffalo QB Zach Maynard to the tune of 400 yards and four TDs; however, Pitt was packing some offense of its own, most notably freshman phenom Dion Lewis, who bested his 128-yard, three-touchdown output last week with 190 yards rushing, 46 yards receiving, and two scores on Saturday. The Panthers also got a career game from late-blooming TE Dorin Dickerson, who had seven first-half catches and three touchdowns from QB Bill Stull. Stull was an efficient 21-30 for 172 yards and three TDs, with no picks (although he nearly threw one in the Panthers' first drive).
As for the Pitt defense, they allowed touchdowns of 24, 54, 67, and 12 yards, so we know they're not allergic to the big play. And that goes both ways, because the Panther defense also took back a Buffalo fumble 5o yards for a touchdown and an interception of Maynard 30 yards in setting up Pitt's final TD, a two-yarder from Ray Graham towards the end of the fourth quarter. Buffalo would fumble three times in the game, leading to 27 Panther points.
Wanny's boys were a tad sloppy in other areas of the game, with 11 penalties for 119 yards. But a win is a win is a win, and the Panthers now take a 2-0 record into a matchup next Saturday with Navy, which rebounded from last week's loss at Ohio State with a 32-14 win over Louisiana Tech.

As for Penn State, they also moved to 2-0 with a 28-7 win over Greg Paulus and Syracuse on Saturday. The Nittany Lions gradually built a 28-0 lead by scoring one touchdown in each quarter, losing the shutout with 4:23 left on a Paulus-to-Donte Davis score covering 16 yards.
Paulus struggled his way to 105 yards passing on 14 completions, and he threw two interceptions. Evan Royster led the way for Penn State with two touchdowns, including a 49-yarder on a short pass on Penn State's opening drive. The Lions also got 240 yards passing and three TDs from QB Daryll Clark, with 79 of those yards going to WR Graham Zug.
After fattening up on Akron and Syracuse the past two weeks, the cupcakes keep on coming for PSU, as Temple comes to town next Saturday at 12 PM. Penn State has outscored their opponents by a combined score of 59-14 so far in 2009.
