JACK WILSON, SNELL DEALT TO SEATTLE

Jack Wilson's ongoing nightmare is finally over. The longtime Bucco SS has been dealt to Seattle along with disgruntled pitcher Ian Snell in exchange for a package of five guys: top catching/first base prospect Jeff Clement, SS Ronny Cedeno and three right-handed pitchers: Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock. More details on the new guys as soon as possible.

i like this deal for what it is. We get 5 players for 2, Clement is a former #3 overall pick and rated the top mariners prospect 2 of last three years. Cedeno is speedy and can fill in at second and short for now. Snell is a head case who had it with Pittsburgh and we have had it with him. Right? More and More depth and competition the bucs bring in which we need. Jack's age, marginal stick and big contract not needed here and if you are going to blow it up, blow it all up. Right? We will miss a a great glove and a great guy who loved Pittsburgh and loved being a Pirate in Jack Wilson.

The most disturbing news is of a Zach Duke trade rumor. Now that would be stupid.

I don't know why my user name is Cystic Fibrosis. UGH.

why am I afraid that Snell will make this trade look bad

Yeah but even if they are Five Stooges, so what?

It's not like we gave up Jason Bay or Aramis Ramirez to get them. Ian Snell was never gonna pitch here again. And Jack wasn't going to have his option picked up because $7 million is way way way too much for good field/no hit SS.

The only thing that bothers me is the strategy employed. The top prospect in this deal looks to be Catcher Jeff Clement. Don't we have a pretty good catcher already? How about a SS, 2B, 3B or power hitting OFer?

I have a bad feeling this is going to be the exit strategy for Doumit. Which is just the Pirates way of finding a good player and then recycling him for a cheaper, younger, and less talented model.

Man, forget records, even the Nationals have more talent than we do right now. This team wouldn't win the AAA title. Seriously, other than Doumit, there isn't one player who starts that would start on the vast majority of teams. If we don't lose 110 games next year, I'll be shocked.

When your hungry, quantity beats quality every time. The Pirates are still about the food right?

I loved Captain Jack, but there is no way he was the type of player to command a huge salary. He will be missed, but did isn't too bad.

Cedeno is lousy, but Clement can hit and the pitching prospects don't look like total throw aways in the same vein (sp) as the LaRoche trade. I would like to see where the 6'7" guy is in a couple of years because he has some powerhouse strikeout numbers.

Hopefully all the remaining pirate fans will see it your way when the season starts next year and refuse to pay money to see this (or what's left of this) team...

then, without any fans coming to games, the pirate organization will hopefully be forced to field a competitive team that the city of Pittsburgh can be proud of.

Screw the management of this team.

"We're building for the future!"

More like, "We're the LA Clippers of baseball! We're the most profitable losing team in the world!"

I bet if you went around Pittsburgh today, the average Pittsburgher, casual fan, would not be able to name a single player on this time.

You would think that after 17 years of being losers, this franchise and its ownership would man up and put a decent team on this field.

I don't want to hear we cannot compete with the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, etc... That is pure 100% b.s. Don't trade away your talent when it's high to get 'great prospects' in return to only continue this garbage cycle of being nothing but a farm team for the rest of the league to pick through every July.

I'm also sick of the excuse that it was the 'old regime' that put the team in this situation. Guess what Neal... you won't be in here in two years to see your 'vision' come to fruition.

Plain and simple, "Money Ball" doesn't work as it is not a long term solution. Look at Oakland's record this year and this is a clear example of it.

Ian Snell's penis will look even bigger now that he's in a city with a high Asian population....

In the end, all these prospects are just future trade bait anyway at best, especially if any of them pan out to have a pulse at all. The last thing Nutting wants is to have a group of starters demanding league average pay 3-5 years from now.

I'm originally from Pittsburgh, although I live in Seattle now. Don't look at Clement as a catcher. He can catch, but he's not really that great at it, plus his knees are screwed up.

He projects pretty well, from what I understand, as a first baseman. Caveat - one of the sports talk guys here had an "expert" on who said that when it comes to major league pitching, Clement may be a bit of a head case himself. More of a confidence problem than anything.

People have already started to mistake Ian Snell's penis for the Space Needle

So now when I try to be positive after catching crap every1 else is taking to the bridge?!?!?!

For real, take a lot at what the payroll would be if this current roster was there opening day: about 27 million i think. Now, take out Dirty Sanchez and Grabow and you get around 18 mill. None of what the Pirates mgmt does is EVER financially motivated though, right?

The only thing the old regime did was, when they rebuilt, they tried to trade a few guys for prospects but then bring in some old, cheap vets to waste money on in a feeble attempt to try and be over .500.

You can't have it both ways.

The new guys blowing the whole thing up and I LOVE it. All you people who scream bloody murder after every trade, tell me, do you REALLY think we would've finished over .500 with the guys we traded away since this year started? Honestly?

They have the balls to do what the old regime couldn't, undertake a REAL rebuilding, and not give a shit if it pisses off some short-sighted fans.

They'll be back when it all comes to fruition.

This is Pittsburgh, after all, where people have wanted to bench a QB that has won two Super Bowls that other teams would kill to have for Charlie Batch for the last three years. I chalk the occasional retardation up to people sometimes caring a little TOO much.

BurressWithButterflywings said...

I dont really think that wanting a competitve baseball team to be field once, say, every 17 effing years is a result of retardation. No, they probably wouldn't have done much with what they had to start this year but it is the constant moving of players in and out for all this time that is driving people nuts.

As for people saying Big Ben neede to be benched, yes that was moronic. But mention the Pirates in the same breath as the Steelers and Penguins outside of mentioning that they wear the same colors of play in the same city is absolute blasphemy.

The optimism held by some is staggering. "Oh, they have to build their minor leagues!" "Wow, five players for two!" Whatever. People shouldn't be going to Pirates games, they shouldn't be buying Pirates merchandise, and they shouldn't be paying the team any attention. This isn't a pro team. Why do people continue to support the team? I'm not being facetious, I'd really like to know.

On Dejan's blog it says Wilson learned about the trade first through the media. Classy.

to brian, i could not agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or, you know, they would move because the city didn't support them.

No, leaving Pittsburgh is not an option!!!

Well said Brian!

We need to burn PNC Park to the ground! Get these bums out of my town! I'll wait for the expansion opportunities in ten years!

Jeff_King_Fan said...

i might be assuming here, but doesn't it seem like a lot of Pirate fans are frustrated by the last 17 years?

Brian said...

Look, I'm not telling people how they should or shouldn't feel about the Pirates. Hell, my uncles are Pirates fans, always have been and always will, regardless of the Double-A talent on the field. Gives everyone something to talk about on Father's Day.

But I'm reading some different posts/articles and listening to the radio, and people are dismissing the negativity, as if there's no reason to be upset with 17 years of dump and chase. Yeah, the guys we got back today might turn into something. Same with the ones we got last year. Or, they could be the same caliber of prospects we got the last 20 years that didn't amount to anything. All I'm saying is the disgust is justified, and it's condescending to be reminded that "oh, the front office has a plan!"
