GROW ONE FOR THE TEAM

You were probably planning on growing a playoff beard anyway, but this year you can actually put that excess facial hair to good use. The Pittsburgh Penguins are having a "Beard-a-Thon" to benefit The Lemieux Foundation, and that sounds like a win-win for everyone, with the exception of those who make their living in the shaving industry. The details:

Fans can participate in the beard-a-thon in one of three ways – grow a beard, pledge a friend, family member or co-worker who is growing a beard or pledge a participating Penguins player.

Participants in the Penguins Beard-a-thon will invite family, friends and business associates to pledge their playoff beards. So, every day the fan maintains his beard, more money is raised for the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Fans who are unwilling or unable to grow playoffs beards can also pledge their favorite Penguins player, including Maxime Talbot and Pascal Dupuis.

The fan who raises the most money wins an autographed Sidney Crosby jersey and gets recognized at a Penguins home game during the 2009-10 season. Plus, all donations to the Mario Lemieux Foundation are tax deductible. So basically, there's no good reason not to grow a playoff beard. You can be as irresponsible as you want with your facial hair and simultaneously support a good cause. It's the best-case scenario for Penguin fans. Just be prepared to wear it for a while, if you know what I mean.
