CHRIS BOOTCHECK

Some exciting Pirate news to pass along...the team is very close to signing a free agent. Manny Ramirez? Not quite. Mark Teixeira? Nope. Keep guessing.

Their target is actually a pitcher: 30-year-old Chris Bootcheck, who's been an on-again, off-again member of the Angels in their Najeh Davenport/Brian St. Pierre/Janne Pesonen role since 2003.

His stats: in 2008, a 10.13 ERA in 10 games; for his career, an ERA of 6.04. And the cherry on top, he's had elbow problems! This sounds better and better.

But nothing tops this Bootcheck story from Wikipedia: "On May 2, 2006, Bootcheck was hurt while running from the bullpen to the mound during the Angels' brawl with the Oakland Athletics. He was placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury and missed most of the season."

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 Pittsburgh Pirates!

Meanwhile, they said on Baseball Tonight the market for 2nd tier pitchers is so weak, Derek Lowe could be had for about 3 yrs/$12 million.

Gee, it's great we traded our two great hitting OFers for a bunch of shitty AAA players. I mean, it's not like we could've spent $8-10 million to bring some pitching in here. Nope. That'd be cutting into Nutting's precious profits!

The Pirates are a disgrace to this city. Now I know what it feels like to be a Lions fan.

As the wiseman Randy Baumann once said:

" OOOOOH Sell the g**damn team!"

I wonder how Opie is going to spin this into a great baseball move made by our baseball people for the future of our system?

This team resembles "Major League" in the worst possible way! We covet players whose careers were over 5 seasons ago, we go after Indian prospects that no other team in MLB would touch, and we get rid of any optimistic players that shows any signs of life or talent. It is laughable anymore. My kids have NEVER seen a Pirate winning season. A Generation of losing. That might be their slogan for 2009! "This guy is dead!" "Then take him off the list!"
