CHILI GAME IN THE BURGH

PENGUINS (16-9-4) 9
ISLANDERS (10-17-2) 2

If only Wendy's would still offer the free chili-for-seven goals promotion, there would be thousands of Penguin fans getting a free snack tomorrow, as the Penguins put a touchdown, extra point, and safety on the New York Islanders in a 9-2 victory on Thursday night.

The highlight of the game was not one, but two Penguin hat tricks, courtesy of Pascal Dupuis and Petr Sykora, who ended his Susan Lucci-like streak of close calls in getting his first career three-goal game. Dupuis' trick was also a career first. The scoring was supplemented by Evgeni Malkin, Philippe Boucher, and Miroslav Satan. El Sid had three assists. It was the Pens' first nine-goal game since a 9-4 win over the Flyers on February 7, 2001.

John Curry stopped 24 of 26 in the crease to run his record to 2-1 this season. All is now well in Penguin Land once again.

Fittingly, this beatdown was delivered on the eighth anniversary of an important day in Penguins - and NHL - history: the day Mario Lemieux announced his comeback to hockey. And here's the video played before his first comeback game on December 27, 2000, against the Maple Leafs. Needless to say, the crowd was pumped.

That video nearly brought a tear to my eye. I don't know what I loved most about that, Mario taking the ice to that ovation, the goal itself or Jan Hrdina going to the net.

Last night was total domination. My intern (Isles fan) is in for some serious taunting today. His David Volek comments are worthless today.

The Dec 2000 video is great. Nothing like starting your day with a close-up of Darius Kasparaitis.

I remember coming back to Pittsburgh for Christmas that year, but the real reason was to see that game. I didn't get tickets but I still had to be in town for it. Even sitting in a bar watching it was as memorable as any Stanley Cup clinching win. I also managed to get tickets for his original comeback prior to that in 1995 that was also awesome. With the way the older arena seating layout was, the seats I had were great, 1-row back and right against the end of the Pens bench, so at one point he was basically sitting right next to me and I pointed and told my girlfriend -- who knew basically nothing about hockey -- "This is Mario Lemieux, the best player in the world...ever." Oddly enough, that was against Toronto as well but I'm sure the NHL set it up that way.
