As you may or may not realize, this is the week of the TPC Championship at Sawgrass, when golf's finest take their shots at one of the toughest courses in the world.
Readers who've been with me for the long haul know my close connection with Sawgrass through my father, who "won" Golf Digest's title of America's Worst Avid Golfer there in 1985, taking a 66 on the 17th hole and finishing with a 257 for 18. He is shown below putting up the cartpath after 27 consecutive attempts at reaching the green from the traditional method of...the tee.
Yes, he's crafted quite an athletic legacy for his two sons.
Proving to be The Story That Never Dies all these years later, word trickled in to Mondesi HQ that my father's dubious feat is now playing on The Golf Channel, and sure enough, it is.
Yes, my father's "achievement" was ranked #9 on The Golf Channel's Thrills & Spills: 17 at TPC program, next airing on the channel at 8 PM EST tonight. The program was in a VH1-style countdown format, with commenters talking about the specific events. In this clip, Sporting News Radio host David Stein suggested they shoot my dad to put him out of his misery. Luckily, the organizers decided against that, opting to let him finish a golf round so bad that they'd be talking about it 23 years later.
