CARDINALS 5, PIRATES 1
John Russell insists that the Pirates have a greater goal than to merely reach the long-unattainable .500, but the team's performances in such games would prove otherwise. Last night was another example, as they were limited to just four singles by four St. Louis Cardinals pitchers in a 5-1 loss.
When you're outhit 15-4 you're usually going to end up on the losing end; I'm only surprised the final score wasn't worse, considering the Cardinals left 15 runners on base.
To add insult to injury, the Pirates offense was nearly matched by one Cesar Izturis, who brought three hits to the table - approximately three more than he brought during his Pirate career.
There's not much more to add, other than to point out that Maholm is 4-0 with a 2.74 ERA at PNC Park and 0-4 with an 8.58 ERA on the road. He's pretty much like the Boston Celtics of MLB pitchers.
Today's afternoon matchup is RHP Ian Snell (2-2, 4.53) vs. RHP Joel Pineiro (2-2, 4.05) at 1:15.

Why do they always crap the bed? We should fare well against Piniero today, but marginal starters seem to get the best of us.
