The 4-2 Pirates open their 2007 home schedule today against the lowly, 2-4, "World Champion" St. Louis Cardinals at 1:35 PM. The pitching matchup will be Braden Looper against Ian "KKKKKKKKKKK" Snell. And to the best of my knowledge, Michael Keaton will not be throwing out the first pitch.
The game-time temperature should be about 38 degrees, among the coldest in PNC Park history. The record high for this date was 80 degrees in 2001 - the home opener in PNC's first year; the record low was 15 degrees in 1977. Hope they let you bring in a blanket this year.
The game is sold out, despite the presence of any fireworks (you'll have to wait all the way until, uh, tomorrow for those) or bobbleheads (they're saving those until...Friday).
The year is already off to a great start - there are no Pirates on ESPN's All-Overpaid team (although as the author points out, they're still coughing up $5 mil to JKendall this year). So here's hoping the Bucs continue their tepid start and give us something to blog about later on today. The best-blog-case scenario would be another controversial opening day guest, following by an exciting contest ended by a Don Kelly walk-off grand slam, and the subsequent explosion of Greg Brown's head.

I am counting down the days until I start work at Gateway Center 4 and, after a long Monday at the office, can meander over to PNC, find a 9 buck ticket in the outfield, grab 2 $1 hot dogs and a beer, and watch the Buccos. I just hope Maholm and Armas don't get too many starts the nights I am there.
Not only did they play in Steeler weather, they played like the Steelers did more about half of last season.
They played worse than the Steelers... the Bucs had fewer hits today than J-Peezy had last season.
Unbelievable... they couldn't score a run off some dude who bagged my groceries at the Bellevue Kuhn's last week.

Greg Brown's head will explode on Sunday, when Ian Snell is pitching a shutout. With one out, two-on in the ninth - Pirates leading 3 - 1 (lone Giants run a Barry solo shot) - Bonds swaggers to the plate. On an 0-2 slider, Bonds smacks a sharp grounder toward the shortstop side of the bag. Jack is playing behind 2nd base. Jack makes a diving stop, and while in mid-air, flips the ball behind his back to Freddy, who then whizzes a throw to Laroche. Double play. Pirates win! Fireworks in the press box. On Monday, the Pirates bury Greg's body. Littlefield hires the generic radio announcer heard during PNC Bank radio spots to replace Brownie. Greatest. Season. Ever.
