SANTONIO WILL START

Here's a briefing of the Tomlin press conference today:

--WR Santonio Holmes is back with the team and will start on Sunday. I'm sure he's learned his lesson.

--RB Willie Parker is day-to-day. Aren't we all. But officially, it's "questionable".

--NT Casey Hampton is day-to-day with turf toe but will probably play.

--QB Ben Roethlisberger has a sore shoulder and is day-to-day. I'm guessing he'll play.

--T Marvel Smith is day-to-day with a back strain and will start if he can play.

--S Ryan Clark is doubtful with a shoulder separation

--P Mitch Berger is rehabbing his hamstring; Steelers worked out Ricky Schmitt and will sign him if Berger can't go.

--LB Keyaron Fox is still recovering from a hammy injury and his status is up in the air

--LS Greg Warren is out for the year, and the Steelers will sign a replacement by day's end. I'm guessing James Harrison's work at the position is done for the foreseeable future.

--DB Bryant McFadden is out this week, recovering from a broken arm.

--Either Tyrone Carter and Anthony Smith will start at safety on Monday.

The News: Steelers Edition

A few nonviolent Steelers bits o' news:

--ESPN had their Steelers: On the Clock draft segment, hosted by Ron Jaworski, Mel Kiper, Chris Mortensen, and Mike Tirico. SOJ was kind enough to post the video.

--The Steelers brought in 300-pound DT Anthony "Booger" McFarland for a thorough tire-kicking. He missed all of last season with a knee injury and failed a physical for the Colts last month. You've got me sold!

--A&L Motors, creators of the beloved Penguins commercial with Malkin & Co., seems to have a little problem with Verron Haynes.

--Whew! The Steelers were able to lock up long-snapper Greg Warren for three more years.

--Arizona State RB Ryan Torain, Michigan OLB Shawn Cable and Tennessee LB Jerod Mayo visited the Steelers on Tuesday. They signed none of them, as that would be against league rules.

--No, not even the Cleveland Browns want Clark Haggans.

--The Steelers have a slideshow of their offseason workouts, for those of you interested.

--Want a job at Heinz Field? Here's your chance. Seriously, who wouldn't want to serve concessions to intoxicated Steeler fans on a frigid Sunday afternoon?

Morning Headlines

DOWN GOES HOSSA: The Penguins dropped a less-than-inspiring 5-1 decision at Boston, but the worst news is that of Marian Hossa, who sprained his MCL in his Pittsburgh debut. The injury was neatly summed up by Bruin Glen Murray:

"I don't know what happened," he said. "I turned, and we collided. We hit at the hips or the knee or something, then all I heard was, 'Oh [expletive], oh [expletive], oh [expletive].' I figured it had to be him."

DOWN GOES GORZO: Tom Gorzelanny missed his first start of the preseason against the Philadelphia Phillies because of left shoulder discomfort. Wow...Tom Verducci was right on the money on this prediction. And so soon in the season!

NATE WASHINGTON IS GOING TO GET PAID: The Steelers issued a $1.4 million tender for the greatest thing to ever come out of Tiffin. They also issued tenders for offensive tackle Trai Essex, guard Chris Kemoeatu, and long-snapper Greg Warren. As for linebacker Andre Frazier, "Don't let the door hit ya".

FRANTIC START TO FREE AGENCY: Not in Pittsburgh, of course. But there have been several deals done already, such as the Dolphins giving a five-year, $25 million deal to 49ers guard Justin Smiley that included a $9 million guarantee. The 49ers responded by signing former Vikings LB Dontarrious Thomas, Lions QB J.T. O'Sullivan, Panthers RB DeShaun Foster and former Steeler KR Allen Rossum. Alan Faneca is reportedly close to a deal with the Jets, who are also close to a trade for Carolina's Kris Jenkins.

GOVERNATOR GIVING KIDS TANK RIDES: Arnold Schwarzenegger owns an Austrian army tank which he's having shipped to Cali so that he can offer rides to school children. Are you listening, Ed Rendell?
