PG: ZIERLEIN OUT, ARIANS STILL IN
In another dramatic twist, Gerry Dulac of the PG is reporting that O-Line coach Larry Zierlein will be fired (as previously reported by other outlets) and Bruce Arians will be retained as offensive coordinator.
The Arians news is in direct conflict of ESPN 1250's report yesterday by Ken Laird that Arians would be let go, presumably later in the week.
As I pointed out to an emailer this morning, Arians is quickly becoming as polarizing as Pitt-Penn State talk in these parts. A portion of Steeler Nation has embraced his offensive philosophy and a portion simply has not. So it will be very interesting to see the reaction in the wake of this news.

LARRY ZIERLEIN REPORTEDLY FIRED
Today's reportedly-fired Steeler assistant coach is O-Line coach Larry Zierlein, as reported by National Football Post and Mike Lombardi of NFL Network.
Zierlein, who has been with the Steelers since Mike Tomlin's first season in 2007, has coached at various levels of football since 1970, including gigs in Cleveland and Buffalo in the NFL, and Houston, LSU, Tulane, and Cincinnati in college. It was at Cincinnati in 1999-00 where Zierlein initially coached with Tomlin, who was in charge of the defensive backs.
Unfortunately, Zierlein will be most remembered for two things during his stint in Pittsburgh: a much-maligned offensive line and a well-publicized e-mail gaffe in 2007.
Meanwhile, talk of yesterday's Ken Laird report on the pending termination of Bruce Arians continues to be strong. Steel City Insider's Jim Wexell reports that he's been told Arians himself was the source of the leak.

BRUCE ARIANS REPORTEDLY OUT AS O.C. - UPDATED
ESPN 1250's Ken Laird just reported that the Steelers will, in fact, part ways with Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians. More info on this as it become available.

CHANGES COMING TO STEELERS STAFF
As surprises go, this isn't exactly on the level of the Tiger Woods saga, but nonetheless, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting pending changes in the Steelers' coaching staff following their 2009 freefall.
This team won a Super Bowl and returned all their major coordinators - that's virtually a rarity in today's football culture. Even the Super Bowl runner-up lost their offensive coordinator to another NFL team. While it's true that the window has closed on Dick LeBeau's head coaching career, Arians has never been a hot property as a head coaching candidate, and at 57 has probably seen his window close as well. The league is skewing towards younger, energetic, workaholic coaches, not 57-year-old lifetime assistants. Perhaps Tomlin should look for a few ladder-climbers when making up the 2010 coaching staff. It's certainly worked out well in the past for this organization.
*By the way, be sure to watch ESPN's embedded video, where Cris Carter points out at the 2:41 mark that "it's hard to impose your will on a team, and that part has caughten up to the Pittsburgh Steelers." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Changes are expected with Pittsburgh's special teams coach Bob Ligashesky, amongst others.A telltale sign of a great coaching staff is one that gets picked clean by the rest of the league after the season, and that's never been a hallmark of a Mike Tomlin team. Look at the old Bill Cowher staffs - they were basically breeding grounds for future NFL head coaches. The only current Tomlin coach I've heard mentioned in the running for another job was running back coach Kirby Wilson for the UNLV job a few weeks ago - not exactly the same as losing Jim Haslett to run the New Orleans Saints, or Dom Capers to coach the Carolina Panthers.
Other coaches that could be in trouble in Pittsburgh include offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and offensive line coach Larry Zierlein.
