After a first half in which they scored a season low 23 points, the fourth-ranked Pitt Panthers rallied to edge the West Virginia Mountaineers, 71-66, in Morgantown on Monday night. Pitt was playing their first game without injured guard Ashton Gibbs, who's out up to two weeks with a knee injury.
On the score sheet, Nasir Robinson led the Panthers with 15 points on Monday night in front of a national ESPN audience. Gary McGhee added 13, Travon Woodall had 12, and Brad Wanamaker tossed in 11 to contribute to a balanced Pitt attack. Sans Gibbs, the Panthers were obviously limited from long range, hitting only one three-pointer on just six attempts Monday night, but they were able to tweak their gameplan accordingly in avenging an embarrassing 70-51 loss at Morgantown last year.
Sophomore forward Deniz Kilicli led the Mountaineers with a career-high 19 points, while Kevin Jones (12) was the only other West Virginia player to reach double figures.
The victory means that Pitt (22-2, 10-1 Big East) has now won at least 20 games overall and at least 10 in the Big East for the 10th consecutive season. West Virginia (15-8, 6-5) has now lost four of their last five.
The Panthers have one more game on the slate this week, facing off at #10 Villanova on Saturday night at 9 p.m. The Wildcats (19-4, 7-3 Big East) are riding a two-game winning streak, with victories over Maruqette and West Virginia to their credit. They're led on offense by senior guard Corey Fisher, who is averaging 15.7 PPG this season.
