Malkin Joins Crosby in Sitting Out All-Star Game

The number of Penguins in this weekend's All-Star Game is dwindling by the day; first, King Crosby gracefully bowed out due to a concussion, and today, it became official that teammate Evgeni Malkin will also miss the game due to injury.

The 24-year-old is nursing a sore knee and a sinus infection, and hasn't played since a 4-1 win against Detroit on January 18. He will also miss tonight's game against the Islanders at the CEC with infection-related pressure in his head. But Coach Disco thinks that some rest will do Geno well:

"He needs to get healthy before he can move forward. Is that during the break? Is that after the break? We don't know that. We hope it's in the next week or so that he can think about getting back on the ice again," said Bylsma.

Malkin has 15 goals and 37 points in 42 games so far this season, numbers that pale in comparison to the 32/34/66 put up by his concussed teammate thus far. Beyond the physical reasons, I think a mental break would also do the charismatic Russian a world of good this weekend, and apparently so do his bosses. As for Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury, they're now in the on-deck circle for dropping out of the league's upcoming exhibition.
