Steelers Cut Jeff Reed, Sign Shaun Suisham

Well, everyone got their wish: the Steelers finally parted ways with the Bride-to-be today, signing free agent Shaun Suisham and cutting Jeff Reed

Suisham was in Steeler camp in 2005 and has since had two stops in Dallas, two in Washington, and stints with San Francisco, Cleveland, and St. Louis. He's the definition of the word "journeyman," and he's the author of a kick called "The Choke". But he's far, far behind Reed in scandalous internet photos and fan criticism. And since you can't get any worse than last in the league in field goal percentage, I guess the team has nowhere to go but up.

"I guess the team has nowhere to go but up."

Yet somehow it seems like they went down. I really think they should have waited till the offseason. This is clearly not Danny's team anymore. Too many off field issues, Owners telling coaches how to gameplan, and what I feel are kneejerk reactions for Santonio and Reed.

Hmmm, the "choke". He missed a 23 yarder. How long was Reed's miss last week? With considerable less pressure? Yeah, i'm not heart broken about Reed leaving. This is what you're gonna get if you replace a kicker in midseason.

"Suisham signed with the Cleveland Browns on May 18, 2010. He was cut on June 17, 2010." ---Oh man, is he 'not good enough for the Browns'? or should we just be glad we got him now because the browns track record for personnel decisions isn't so hot lately?

Let's see how good Suisham does the rest of the year and see if we're talking about kicker as a need in April.

Good luck in Cincy, Skippy. And skanks for the memories.

Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. I am not sad to see Reed gone, but let's not kid ourselves about what we're getting. It's possible to get lucky, probably more so with a kicker than any other position, but there is a reason he wasn't in the NFL last week.

There goes the key component to Arian's red zone offensive strategy.

On the surface I don't like the move, but I posted here yesterday that I believed the whole contract 'diss' in his mind has totally affected him mentally to this point.

I think it's also clear despite his performance if he doesn't act like a jackass in the locker room he still 'has a hat' this week.

I don't feel like he wanted to be here anymore. When you look at him as one of the most accurate kickers in the league, how many of the FG's he attempted were short FG's because of the futility of the RZ offense.

I remember commenting last year when we were all debating over BA and his culpibility, I said that more imporant than yards, individual stats, and PPG are 3rd Down and RZ TD conversion rates. I don't have the facts in front of me, but have they improved this year?

@burgh - i think you're right. his recent performance, public opinion, and booing is in his head...

some teams don't even look at their kicker out of fear of something getting their head.

i think the steelers gave him a chance to shake the cobwebs, but after sunday's post game interview, it was clear that he has a lot going on in his skull...

Reed should have been let go a while ago so the Steelers could have landed a good kicker to work with. The lewd pictures, off field issues, and outspokenness has finally caught up with him, and now they finally gave him the boot. Anyone who has played the game knows that he is a KICKER, who should know his role, shut up, and put the ball through the uprights consistently on Sunday.
You can say all you want that it should have been dealt with after the season, but it had to be done to hand the responsibility to more of a professional.

With that all said, let by gones be by gones and move on. The Steelers are 6-3, tied for 1st in the AFC North with a few issues to clear up. Keep one thing in mind, though. Not ONE team in the NFL this year is perfect. Each one has their flaws, and I think that is in favor of the Steelers so far.

Will we see a shirt that reads "Steelers gonna hate"?

I wanted him gone before the season because I felt he was starting to get rattled then and you basically send the same kind of message you sent by getting rid of Holmes.

I am not sure about getting rid of him now. I am sure Suisham will be closer to Todd Peterson than Skippy Reed.

I agree with Burgh and Corey the guy's head was done and he was becoming a lockeroom issue.

I'd have liked to see us get Mike Vanderjagt, just because it would be really funny.

I'm not gonna focus on the last 3 months.

I'll just focus on the first 7 great seasons.

It was a fun ride JR. Good luck, and lay off the booze buddy.

Field goal issues aside, does this mean we might have a chance of getting the ball further down the field, or even better hang time with either Suisham or Sepulveda kicking off?

When the weather turns really foul in Pittsburgh, we'll miss Skippy.

He does reportedly kick off deeper, but let's face it: there is a reason he hasn't had work to this point.

I also wish Reed well, but I have to wonder if we (as fans) don't know more going on behind the scenes with Reed. I was at the game and that first field goal he made wasn't real sharp off the foot either.

I think we could be missing him too later in the season, but I also think he woudn't be the kicker he has in the past. He hasn't been at all this year.
