Don't Miss Your Chance For a $40 Bottle of Water

Maybe I missed this, maybe it's been out for a while and I didn't see it, but it's news to me. A reader just sent me a link to the NHL online store offering what looks like a very small bottle of water melted down from the Mellon Arena ice.

OK, that's a neat (but not exactly unique) concept. I've seen my share of Fenway Park dirt and similarly-themed products over the years. So what the value of a vial of melted Mellon ice these days? I'd say with the proper packaging and marketing, you might be looking at a $20-$25 retail, keeping in mind that you're essentially selling people a small bottle of water. WRONG.

Whoever is in charge of selling this product has much greater aspirations, because the SRP through the NHL website is a whopping $39.99, plus another $6 for shipping. Who knows how many have actually sold, but if they can get $46 for this, what's the total value of Mellon Arena in terms of memorabilia? We saw some high prices at the auction of Three Rivers Stadium, but that was 10 years ago in a memorabilia market not as rabid as it is today. Seats, signs, urinals (or troughs)...the sky's the limit for collectors wanting a piece of the Igloo when it eventually comes down. I know one thing: that's going to be some valuable rubble.

I've posted this on another blog, not sure how valid this "ice water" is?

There is a video on the Pens site of them getting rid of the ice and shoveling it into drains.

Unless they had someone on the other end bottling it as it came off, I question the authenticity of it.

they should sell all of this 'memorabilia' to pay for the arena

I've heard if you dab a little behind the ears you'll have a better chance of scoring with Katie O'Malley. That, or you'll get a nasty skin irritation.

Katie O'Malley was great in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
