Thursday News and Notes

Today's links feature another crushing loss for Pittsburgh, the Andy Pettitte-Altoona Curve outcome, the Steelers trying out a former college star, Lanny Frattare's new gig, Bill Guerin in a rival's camp, a new sport for Penn State, and much more.

JACKIE EVANCHO of Richland Twp., a 10-year-old opera-style singer, finished second in the America's Got Talent finale last night, behind some guy named Michael Grimm. The loss after advancing so far felt reminiscent of the disappointment after the 1992 NLCS for the city of Pittsburgh, but I'm sure Jackie has a much brighter 18-year stretch ahead than the Pirates did. [WPXI]

Speaking of losing, I'll let DEJAN KOVACEVIC's headline summarize last night's Pirate contest:

The Altoona Curve came up short in their playoff game against ANDY PETTITTE, losing 3-2 despite tagging the rehabbing Yankee lefty for six hits in five innings. The difference was clearly all that HGH he took. [,]

It's official: JORDAN STAAL's infected foot will cause him to miss 5-6 weeks, including the season opener on October 7 and several other games. [PG]
RB ANTONIO PITTMAN, recently cut loose by the Saints, was worked out by the Steelers this week. A former Ohio State standout who ran for nearly 3,000 yards in his three-year Buckeye career, Pittman entered the league in 2007 with the St. Louis Rams and was out of the NFL in 2009. [PG Plus]

BILL GUERIN is on a training camp tryout with the Philadelphia Flyers. Of all the teams in the league, he just had to pick Philly. []

Pittsburgh Sports Report catches up with Waynesburg University's new Assistant Professor of Communication, LANNY FRATTARE. [Pittsburgh Sports Report]

PENN STATE is reportedly close to fielding a hockey team in the 2011-12 season. They're reportedly looking for coaching candidates in the 80+ age range, since it works well for their other sports. OK, I made that part up. It's actually 83+. [93.7 The Fan]

Speaking of the Nittany Lions, was officiating the reason they lost at Bama? A Penn State blog breaks it down. []

Why is DION LEWIS off to such a slow start? A certain mustached coach gives some opinions. [Observer Reporter]

Confident rookie WR ANTONIO BROWN  is a candidate to return kickoffs and punts against the Titans, said Mike Tomlin. "No question Antonio Brown is an attractive option," Tomlin said. "It's good to have options." [Trib]

Let's jump to conclusions on DENNIS DIXON, shall we? [Steelers Lounge]

WINTER CLASSIC ticket packages are still available...through the Capitals website. []

OTTAWA will host the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, the first time that's happened in league history.  I don't know about you, but I'm psyched. [Kukla's Korner]

Maybe Antonio Brown won't call for a fair catch every kick.

Why are the 'lers working out a mediocre-or-worse RB? Isn't that about the lowest possible position on the need chart? (Other than Tyler Grisham style slot-WR)

Wouldn't it be cheaper for Penn State to retro fit the BJC for ice?

doesn't it look like the building was built for an ice rink to be installed later?

Just like in football, I'm sure PSU hockey would be willing to play Pitt Hockey. Oh guys don't have a team.
