Pitt Still Absent From Coaches Poll

As the Coaches Poll voters showed today, it's going to take more than a win over New Hampshire to get Pitt back into the Top 25.

The Panthers remained on the outside looking in of today's top 25, getting enough votes only for the 30th spot in the country after a 38-16 win on Saturday over New Hampshire. A win in their next contest, a showdown with 17th-ranked Miami on September 23 at Heinz Field, will probably be the solution to their current ranking problem, but that game won't happen for 11 more days. So Pitt will have to get used to their status for at least one more week.

Of local interest, West Virginia moved up a spot to #21 after their overtime win against Marshall on Friday night. They sit a spot behind Penn State, which managed only a field goal in a 24-3 loss at Alabama on Saturday. However, both teams will be favorites next Saturday, as the Nittany Lions host Kent State and WVU hosts Maryland.

Alabama remained at #1 nationally with 55 first-place votes, while Terrelle Pryor and Ohio State stuck at #2 with the remaining four first-place votes.

The 59 coaches participating in the 2010 polls are as follows:

Robb Akey, Idaho; David Bailiff, Rice; Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech; Tim Beckman, Toledo; Todd Berry, Louisiana-Monroe; Bret Bielema, Wisconsin; Art Briles, Baylor; Dave Christensen, Wyoming; David Cutcliffe, Duke; Mark Dantonio, Michigan State; Todd Dodge, North Texas; Sonny Dykes, Louisiana Tech; Dan Enos, Central Michigan; Steve Fairchild, Colorado State; Larry Fedora, Southern Miss; Jimbo Fisher, Florida State; Al Golden, Temple; Jim Grobe, Wake Forest; Jim Harbaugh, Stanford; Mike Haywood, Miami (Ohio); Butch Jones, Cincinnati; Brian Kelly, Notre Dame; Jerry Kill, Northern Illinois; Mike Locksley, New Mexico; Mike London, Virginia; Bill Lynch, Indiana; Mike MacIntyre, San Jose State; Doug Marrone, Syracuse; Urban Meyer, Florida; Dan Mullen, Mississippi State; Ken Niumatalolo, Navy; Tom O'Brien, North Carolina State; George O'Leary, Central Florida; Bo Pelini, Nebraska; Chris Petersen, Boise State; Bobby Petrino, Arkansas; Gary Pinkel, Missouri; Larry Porter, Memphis; Jeff Quinn, Buffalo; Paul Rhoads, Iowa State; Mark Richt, Georgia; Mike Riley, Oregon State; Rich Rodriguez, Michigan; Nick Saban, Alabama; Steve Sarkisian, Washington; Greg Schiano, Rutgers; Howard Schnellenberger, Florida Atlantic; Mike Sherman, Texas A&M; Steve Spurrier, South Carolina; Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee; Mike Stoops, Arizona; Charlie Strong, Louisville; Kevin Sumlin, Houston; Bob Toledo, Tulane; Jim Tressel, Ohio State; Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech; Kyle Whittingham, Utah; Paul Wulff, Washington State; Ron Zook, Illinois.

WVU deserved to move up in the polls after and overtime win against Marshall like Paris Hilton deserves her fame and fortune.

These polls get more ridiculous by the week.

If Pitt deserves to be in the polls, they will be there when it counts. I don't get too caught up in them. Especially this time of year. Beating UNH by any margin doesn't count to me.

As for Penn State, I think they need to limit Joe Paterno's exposure on the sidelines from TV as much as they do in the playbook. Paterno was one of the all time greatest coaches in sports. That said, watching him wander around on the sidelines, staring into space, and stammering with Erin Andrews isn't funny to me. It's sad.

I hope they can find a way to make this his last year. I respect his contribution to the sport, but his legacy to me the last few years looks like Franco Harris in a Seahawks uniform.

WVU got a "Pity the Big Least" vote. You have to justify your conference's automatic bid SOMEHOW.

I'm sure the fact PSU remains ranked ahead of PITT is really going to eat at you guys.

To Dominic Errico

Enjoy it now. The September polls count sooooo much in December. I can't believe PSU played a road game this month not to mention one against a team that can play. You are lucky Sabin took the pedal off the throttle.
I will bet my house against your trailer who will be ahead in the end.

I bet you would have said the same thing in November last year after Penn State lost to OSU, too, huh. Good thing you didn't make that bet...

You're confusing PSU for WVU. Those West Virginia hicks are the ones living in trailers. Most PSU alumni are actually successful. Kind of like our football team.

Right now its a bit too early for polls, Pitt was a 3 point under-dog and played Utah with a chance to win and they fell out of the top 25, you could say they payed the price for scheduling a hard first game.

WVU was lucky to win but they did and they moved up a bit, WVU would have fell like a rock if Marshall would have won.

PSU who lost by a wide margin and dropped a little.

Polls are pretty much worthless right now because most teams are playing inferior opponents until their conference schedule begins.

Playing a difficult nonconference schedule in college football really hurts you in the polls early if you lose.
