So far, the final regular season game at Mellon Arena has lived up to the hype...and then some.
The video above led up to a dramatic pregame ceremony featuring over 50 players, coaches, and executives from the past (each donning a customized Pens jersey), with Mario Lemieux being the last Penguin legend introduced. The sight of 66 in a Penguins uniform on Mellon ice one last time was memorable, to say the very least.
As for the game itself, fireworks went off just 23 seconds into the contest, Brooks Orpik scored the first of six goals scored in the opening period. After 20 minutes, the Penguins held a 4-2 lead, as Alex Goligoski, Evgeni Malkin, and Sidney Crosby each beat New York Islander goalie Martin Biron.
And for those of you interested, the full list of those taking part in the pregame ceremony included the following gentlemen:
Syl Apps, Andy Bathgate, Bob Berry, Les Binkley, Phil Bourque, Rob Brown, Mike Bullard, Dave Burrows, Jay Caufield, Kim Clackson, Paul Coffey, John Cullen, Bob Errey, Mario Faubert, George Ferguson, Dave Hannan, Randy Hillier, Mark Johnson, Eddie Johnston, Mark Kachowski, Rick Kehoe, Pierre Larouche, Francois Leroux, Troy Loney, Mario Lemieux, Lowell MacDonald, Greg Malone, Gilles Meloche, Larry Murphy, Eddie Olczyk, Dennis Owchar, Bob Paradise, Craig Patrick, Frank Pietrangelo, Greg Polis, Jean Pronovost, Jack Riley, Gary Rissling, Gary Roberts, Duane Rupp, Ken Schinkel, Ron Schock, Ron Stackhouse, Red Sullivan, Peter Taglianetti, Bryan Trottier, Gene Ubriaco, Bryan Watson, Ken Wregget, Warren Young and Wendell Young.

This might seem impossible, but in report on the Pens reunion this evening, Jory Rand actually mis-identified Mario Lemiuex. While showing video of Mario skating onto the ice tonight, Rand referred to him as "the individual who received the loudest ovation, who has stood taller than all other players, who has saved the Penguins so many times....Sidney Crosby". Say it ain't so.
