TODAY'S HEADLINES

Jay-Z was in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night for the first time since Rock the Mic Tour with 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott on July 2, 2003. That means I'm now 0-for-2 on attending Jay-Z concerts in Pittsburgh. [PG]

Ben Roethlisberger has yet to be interviewed by Georgia police who are investigating a sexual assault allegation made against him by a 20-year-old college student. This information comes directly from Roethlisberger's attorney, Ed Garland.

This is the complete opposite of a report from NFL.com reporter Jason La Canfora, which said that Ben flew to Georgia on Saturday to "cooperate" with the investigation. [SI; NFL.com]

Larry Foote thanks God that he didn't sign a long-term deal in Detroit, where he played last season.

I'd agree that he's extremely lucky the way things worked out, especially considering the fact that he was able to re-join the Steelers, not a team traditionally known for taking back those who have left. The fact that he got a three-year deal worth more than $9 million is just icing on the cake. [DetNews.com]

Bill Clark has been suspended indefinitely by the Duquesne Dukes due to conduct detrimental to the team. The junior is second on the team in scoring (14.1 PPG) and rebounding (6.0 RPG) and leads the Dukes with 46 three-pointers.

Duquesne (16-15) travels to Princeton (20-8) for a first-round College Basketball Invitational game on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. [KDKA]

Steve Downie has been fined a whole $1,000 for his dirty hit on Sidney Crosby on Sunday. I'm sure that and the lack of a suspension will surely make him think the next time he gets the urge to potentially injure a player. [ESPN]

Franco Harris will be in Hershey, PA, at the Hershey Lodge on Friday, March 26, 2010, for the KPMG Celebration of Excellence.

Proceeds from the Celebration of Excellence support The Second Mile’s programs that touch the lives of more than 200,000 Pennsylvania children annually. [CBS 21]

Byron Leftwich is reportedly on the Steelers' radar pending his probable release from the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Leftwich played in just three games for the Bucs last season, with four touchdowns, three INTs, and a QB rating of 71. He won a ring as Ben Roethlisberger's primary backup in 2008. [Examiner.com]

Dominic Fields of Homewood is in hot water after he masterminded a plot to extort $50,000 from his father by faking his kidnapping.

And yes, faking a kidnapping is exactly the same idea Norm MacDonald and Dave Chappelle had in the underrated 2000 movie "Screwed", which was shot and took place in Pittsburgh. If you've never seen it, go rent it. Dominic Fields probably did. [WPXI; Wikipedia]

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl wants to copy the sugary drink tax that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is proposing for their city, which is two cents an ounce. As you can see, it would add $1.35 to the cost of a two-liter bottle of pop. This should go over well. [Early Returns]

Colin Campbell now officially moves into the lead over Gary Bettman on the list of who's hurting the NHL the most. If the past two weeks haven't been mind-boggling enough, this $1000 fine just adds insult to injury and makes it official that everyone running the NHL is insane.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear next that a player is suspended 5 games and fined $100,000 for spiting on the ice, followed by news that Campbell -- on a whisky drinking, pot smoking binge -- put his baby in the oven.

I wonder how much a fine it would be for me to just walk up behind somebody on the street and try to snap their leg in half?

I am sure that would end up costing more than $1,000.

I can imagine the other major sports as people at a house party, pointing and laughing at the NHL as it wears a lampshade on its' head, pissing in the potted ferns. What a joke...

How can you forget the Steelers bringing back the shell of Chad Brown in '06?

I picked up "Screwed" in a wal-mart 5 dollar bin. I can safely say it was well worth the money. I never even heard of the movie before that, but since have seen it played on comedy central a few times

And government regulating something without officially doing it is the oldest trick in the book (7 dollar a pack cigarettes in New York). There are waaaaay too many fat little kids waddling around, but why should everybody suffer?

Hell a speeding ticket is what....250 bucks?

What a pathetic joke this is.

I agree the suspensions and fines lately make no sense, but someone said it yesterday and I think it bears repeating - at the end of the day, who really cares? Too many whiners these days about outside influences and how they're perceived to impact their team (I'm basically talking about Caps fans). Let's get over it people, and just focus on putting pucks in nets, which for the most part Bettman and Campbell haven't directly affected.

amen, way too many little fat kids, but instead of parents regulating what their kids eat, watch, hear... let's just throw a bitch-fest until someone else does our jobs for us! (thanks gobment) parents need to act like parents. some people are naturally bigger than others, but uber-fat kids are enabled and far too prevalent. We already have to pour tax, so why not tax the other half of nature's perfect nectar, Jack & Cokes? I swear, the yellow cake tax is coming next!!!

$1000 is chump change... especially for a professional athlete. Ask any broke idiot off the streets of philly or DC if they'd pay $1000 to attack Sid, and they'd ALL love to!

Duquesne player suspended? I didn't even know there was another tournament after the NIT?

I actually prefer diet coke with jack and rum so I could care less about a sugar tax. Seeing as how most lazy parents could care less what crap they stuff into their kids fat, whiney pie holes, a sugar tax might help these kids stand a reasonable chance a healthy life.

While they're at it they can tax cheese and ground meat too. That should pretty make all the fast food these little walking trash cans eat daily a once a week priviledge like it was before parents starting using it as an edible pacifier.

Would diet drinks not be taxed? They don't have sugar, but the artificial sweeteners are arguably worse for you.

Ravenstahl is an embarrassment. Hope all you Dems in the Burgh that voted to keep him are happy.

I propose a "Mayor's who spend too much time attending sporting events" tax. We'll add an extra thousand to every ticket Luke or Nutter buy. That should have PA in the plus in no time.

Besides, the world needs fat kids. Who else would play goalie and get picked last on the playgrounds?

Broke But Still Drinking said...

Correction - "Mayors who have their streets plowed first during major winter storms" tax.

Touche. I guess that's why the Germans suck at hockey. Athletic, Nazi bastards.

@Broke,

Amen, if we taxed Douche Ravenstahl everytime he sniffed a pro athlete's jock, we'd be the richest city in America.

That clown has no clue about running a city, I think that is pretty apparent. He has never had a real job, either. So I guess that actually makes him a perfect politician.
