PITT DISMISSES ELIJAH FIELDS

It's been a hot rumor in the land of message boards, and today it was made official: senior LB Elijah Fields has been booted from the Pitt football team for disciplinary reasons. Specifically, that reason was a video of Fields drinking and partying on his now-deleted Twitter page, which a simple Google search turns up as user ID "isthatscoot".

It was the last straw for the troubled yet extremely talented Duquesne HS product, who was one of the jewels of Wanny's early recruiting classes. Fields was ranked as the #10 safety in the country by Scout.com coming out of high school, and was the 2005 AP Pennsylvania Class-A Player of the Year.

Unfortunately, Fields' college career followed the all-too-familiar script of wasted talent. A player with an extremely high ceiling, Fields was frequently in the doghouse for a variety of reasons, enough to get him suspended for the entire 2007 season. Today's action was clearly not because of only one Twitter post, that just happened to be the last push of the boulder over the side of the mountain.

Fields will more than likely finish his college career at a D-II or I-AA school after finishing the current semester at Pitt, given the completion of his course work. The 6'2", 225-pound pure athlete had 34 tackles and three interceptions last year and was expected to challenge for a starting outside linebacker job after switching from safety in the offseason. Unfortunately, it appears that the final chapter of Fields' college career will have to happen somewhere else.

Good riddance.

I hope this kid straightens out eventually. Had more than enough chances.

Agreed. Can't continue to tolerate this type of nonsense.

I hope he jumps to a regional D2 football program, like CalU, IUP, or Edinboro. He may be the type of player needed to draw interest and attention to D2 college football, which is worth it. Some of the top 25 players at certain positions in the upcoming draft are from CalU, IUP, and Edinboro.

Nobody is going to pay much more attention to a PSAC team if Fields is playing for it.

There is no doubt in my mind though that John Luckhardt will be making a phone call, and there is a better than 50 percent chance he is a Vulcan come fall.
