That celebrated 3-0 start for the Pitt Panthers apparently hasn't impressed voters in this week's AP poll, because for a third consecutive week, they're on the outside looking in. In fact, The Fighting Wannys sit at #29, two spots lower than where they found themselves last week.
Standing between the Panthers and the elusive Top-25 ranking: Missouri, Georgia Tech (which was humiliated by Miami last week) and Auburn, which upended WVU 41-30 last night, intercepting Jarrett Brown four times in the process.
The Big East leader continues to be the Cincinnati Bearcats, who went on the road and beat Oregon State on Saturday 28-18, holding heralded RB Jacquizz Rodgers to 73 yards rushing. As a reward, they have moved up to #14 in this week's poll, from #17 last week. The conference's third undefeated team, South Florida, just took a major hit with the loss of QB Matt Grothe for the duration of the season with a torn ACL, and just in time for their game against Florida State next week.
As for Penn State, they stood pat at 5, despite the major upset of #3 USC. I guess the voters don't put much stock in a home win over Temple. The Nittany Lions have a big game coming up on Saturday night at 8 PM against Iowa on ABC, but until then, Lion Nation will have to live with merely being a Top-5 team.

buffalo, youngstown state, and navy. Yeah, that's not going to get it done.
Um...just a quick note...the AP doesn't count. The coaches poll does.
I agree with andy, most teams play 1 warm up game like bowling green or appalachian state, if you play three the voters won't be too kind to you. Plus ND is gonna kill them anyways.

Ok Todd, I wasn't aware that Navy and Buffalo, both of which went to bowl games last year, are on the same level as a middling MAAC or D1-AA team. Thanks for that. Or you could have Penn State's opponents so far this season, which went a COMBINED 13-23 last year.
So which school exactly has played the "warm up" schedule so far this year?
Hey Justin, let's not play this game. They both did, and the only reason Pitt's schedule is better than PSU's is because they get an extra OOC game, which they used on Notre Dame. Whoopee. We still play in a better league by far, so don't even pretend you play a better schedule than we do.
Big 10 is weak and cant win any Bowl games...and Todd, what happened to ND last yr when Pitt played them at ND...thats what I thought...GO PITT!!
No, you don't play in the better conference "by far." And yes, to this point, Pitt's schedule has been better. Period. Spin it however you want. Buffalo and Navy were playing in bowl games last year. Akron, Syracuse and Temple went a COMBINED 13-23. You Big 10 (11?) fans are hilarious, I've never seen a group of people so vastly overrate their conference in in general and their teams in particular.
Penn St. is a good team, I won't take that away from them. They've played a joke of a schedule so far. Absolute joke. Even a total homer like you Adam can't spin it any other way. Go ahead and try.
Pitt deserves to be ranked. That is a good Navy team they beat and save 2 generous calls, Pitt shuts them out.
They held them to 218 total yards, compared to almost 350 given up by tOSU.
i could say more but its like beating a dead horse on here anymore.
I hope PSU or Michigan win hte Big Tenleven because i cant stand tOSU and their ridiculous fans.
And if Navy played them within 4 points, State should wipe the floor with them.
I'm a Pitt fan, but I don't know if they 'deserve' to be ranked. I figure it will all pan out in the end. If they were ranked in the #23-25 range and lose to NC State, then what is the difference?
They need to keep winning, and let the rest handle itself.
As for the Big Ten, I enjoy watching their teams play, but it's far from impressive so far this year.
On the Big 10's worst day, it's 10 times better than the Big East.
Pitt fans are too stupid to realize that when analysts talk about the Big 10 beaing "weak", they're talking in comparison to the SEC and the Big 12. I'd agree on that front. Compared to those two, we aren't nearly as strong at the moment.
But compared to the Big East, it's not even close. When you have one ranked team, you can't even come close to talking about how weak out league is.
Big 10 "worst day" = mid December through early January.
another illustrious pissing contest.
then what happened to all of the big ten bowl victories. not sure which games you were watching but the ones I watched the the little 10 teams walked away with their tail between their legs..the big east won the majority if not all of their bowl games
Yeah ok. Who did the Big East play in their bowls?
We played Texas, USC, Georgia, Kansas and Missouri.
The Big East played power houses like UNC and Oregon St. The only decent team they played was Virginia Tech.
The Big East has an even worse bowl slate this year. Give me a break.
The Big Ten: After Mizzou and Kansas we ROCK!
Yeah, except our best teams weren't playing them, our lower teams were.
Why am I arguing with you all? We're #5 and have gameday coming for Whiteout weekend. Pitt can't even get on TV.
Whiteout Weekend. I'm sure the drycleaners in State College had a busy week getting all the klan gear ready
I love how Adam uses the term 'we', yet when USC blew them out in the bowl game the term was 'they'.
I do wonder why you are on here, arguing or not. Unless it reminds you of getting stuffed in a locker through your school days.
And a well deserved #5 ranking at that. Big win over Temple!!
Please don't judge us PSU fans by this Adam clown. I don't recall voting him as spokesperson.
Hey Dan, what, in your opinion, have I said that is inaccurate, Mr. Model Nittany Lion
Dan, FTW
It's not so much what you say, as it is the attitude and the myopia.
